Jujutsu Kaisen: The Impact of the Final Fight on Yuji’s Character Development

In the latest chapters of Jujutsu Kaisen, Yuji Itadori appears to have undergone significant character development. As most of the Jujutsu High sorcerers have been incapacitated, Yuji stands as the sole remaining fighter. With Todo Aoi’s arrival, his determination to keep fighting has only grown stronger. Additionally, Gojo (Yuta) has made a comeback as well.

Despite initial expectations, upon closer examination, it appears that Yuji’s character development is actually taking a different direction. In the recent chapters, he displays a greater level of anger and hatred towards the Demon King, and his actions have become increasingly violent. It’s almost as if Yuji is transforming into Ryomen Sukuna.

There is an intriguing theory circulating within the Jujutsu Kaisen fandom. It suggests that Yuji may undergo a negative transformation and eventually become Sukuna – an outcome previously believed to be impossible.

Based on the theory, it is possible that Yuji has strayed from his initial objective of saving Megumi Fushiguro after his awakening. At present, he appears to be fixated on destroying Sukuna entirely. This is evident in his animalistic growls and aggressive tactics, as seen in the latest chapters.

The conclusion of Jujutsu Kaisen chapter 260 showed Yuji attempting to extract Sukuna’s heart, indicating that he is not concerned about Megumi being trapped within the Demon King. After his initial effort to reach Megumi’s soul, Yuji has not made any further attempts and is instead engaged in a battle of physical attacks with Sukuna.

Despite the overwhelming despair of watching Choso die before his eyes, Yuji’s determination faltered and he came to a sudden halt, feeling helpless. However, as Sukuna emerged from the smoke, his anger was reignited and he swiftly snapped back to reality, shifting his focus to attacking alongside Todo – indicating that he is now placing a higher priority on defeating Sukuna rather than saving his friend.

Despite Yuji’s intense concentration and hunger for his own demise, even the King of Curses can see it in his eyes. His unwavering focus is solely on defeating Sukuna, making any thoughts of reaching out to Megumi fade into the background for the time being.

Despite Yuji’s deep hatred for Sukuna and his egocentric behavior, recent events have ironically led him to adopt a similar mindset. Instead of his usual selfless nature, Yuji has become solely fixated on defeating Sukuna, neglecting all other responsibilities. This is a stark contrast to his previous character development throughout the series.

This idea is rooted in the fact that Yuji is functionally Sukuna, meaning that they are two distinct entities but share the same being. The ease with which the teenager slips into behaving like the Demon King demonstrates the strong connection between the two. Additionally, Yuji’s unwavering determination to kill Sukuna reflects the latter’s unyielding determination to break Yuji.

Essentially, the two are constantly competing against each other. However, in this scenario, they both share the same worldview. Sukuna despises Yuji’s ideals and is determined to prove his own superiority over all ideals, while Yuji’s relentless pursuit of Sukuna’s demise embodies the Curse’s belief that only one’s own self is important.

Currently, Yuji is not convinced that taking down Sukuna is necessary to protect everyone, despite acknowledging his danger. Rather, Yuji believes that Sukuna’s actions are fueled by pure hatred and animalistic instincts, which reveal his deep-seated enmity towards the Demon King.

Before the Shinjuku showdown and even after his awakening, these facts were made evident. Ultimately, Yuji’s animosity towards Sukuna continues to push him forward, leading him to potentially take on the role of “Ryomen Sukuna,”not necessarily because of his chances of victory, but because he has adopted the spiritual and mental traits of Ryomen Sukuna.

Final thoughts

The theory presented is highly intriguing and effectively ties together various elements. Yuji’s progress during the Shinjuku battle is remarkable, surpassing his previous limitations. The potential that Gojo and a select few mentioned is now manifesting with great intensity.

Nevertheless, if this theory is accurate, Yuji could be going down a different path. It is understandable that he is filled with anger, having experienced numerous defeats and encountered numerous obstacles. However, if he succeeds in defeating Sukuna, he may end up becoming the very thing he detests.
