Jujutsu Kaisen: The Dynamic Between Sukuna and Tengen
The 257th chapter of Jujutsu Kaisen opened with Uraume inquiring about Sukuna’s connection to Itadori Yuji. The Cursed King responded by revealing that he and Itadori shared the same soul, as he was the son of Kenjaku. Sukuna went on to recount how he had consumed his twin brother in the womb, causing his brother’s soul to be taken in by Kenjaku.
Uraume’s apprehension grew as he suspected Itadori Yuji to possess a formidable power, possibly on par with that of the King of Curses. Itadori relentlessly unleashed Black Flash attacks on Sukuna, while Ino also entered the fray with Nanami’s sword and a summoned dragon through his cursed ability.
Despite successfully defeating the dragon, Sukuna was caught off guard by Yuji’s surprise attack with another Black Flash. The King of Curses began to grow concerned, realizing that Yuji may be trying to surpass him. The chapter concluded with Yuji delivering a seventh consecutive Black Flash to Sukuna, as the narrator encouraged Yuji to not only reach Sukuna’s level, but to surpass him.
During a meeting between Kenjaku and Tengen, Kenjaku’s expression turned into a smirk as he gazed at Tengen’s face. Curious, Tengen inquired about the reason for the amusement, and Kenjaku proceeded to draw a comparison between Tengen’s face and that of Ryomen Sukuna. However, as there was no context provided, many fans were left feeling perplexed about the significance of this interaction.
In Jujutsu Kaisen chapter 257, new insight is revealed about the meeting between Kenjaku and Tengen. This aligns with previous discussions in the series about the longstanding promise between Kenjaku and Ryomen Sukuna, indicating that they have been acquainted since their youth.
This information also implies that Kenjaku may have known Sukuna’s mother. Considering that Tengen was originally a woman before transforming into his current cursed spirit form, Kenjaku may have drawn a comparison between them and Sukuna, possibly seeing them as his mother.
The Origins of Tengen
Despite the lack of information about Tengen’s life as a human, it has been hinted on multiple occasions that Tengen was biologically female during their early years.
In the 23rd volume, Gege Akutami revealed a drawing of Tengen in their human form, depicted as a girl with disheveled hair. Additionally, in chapter 202, Tengen corrected Yuki Tsukumo for referring to him as a geezer and instead referred to themselves as a granny.
