Jujutsu Kaisen: Why sorcerers cover their eyes

Many sorcerers in Jujutsu Kaisen cover their eyes, but is there a common reason for this practice among them?

Despite the complex and fascinating power system in Jujutsu Kaisen, cursed energy and techniques are utilized by all characters, including Jujutsu sorcerers, curse users, and curses themselves, in their battles. This is a common element in the Shonen manga genre, but there are a few exceptions such as Maki and Toji who do not possess cursed energy. However, they compensate for this with their exceptional physical abilities and weapons imbued with another’s cursed energy.

The cursed spirits, also known as curses, originate from negative emotions. They possess different abilities and can only be vanquished through cursed techniques. The ability to see these cursed spirits is limited to a select few, and even fewer possess the power to control them.

Despite the reason, sorcerers consistently cover their eyes. While Gojo is known for his trademark blindfold, it is also evident that numerous others also conceal their eyes.

How Covering Their Eyes Helps Sorcerers in Battle

To secretly observe curses, sorcerers will either cover their eyes or wear sunglasses. Curses tend to become more aggressive when they are aware of being watched.

This is particularly applicable to the lower-level curses, which are either newly emerged or lack high levels of intelligence.

Up to this point, we have observed Nanami, Masamichi, and Miguel frequently sporting sunglasses. Furthermore, Ino conceals his face with a mask during fights, while Mei Mei’s braid is positioned in front, partially obscuring her face. The explanation for this is revealed in one of the manga’s additional panels, which showcases Nanami’s character description.

Why Does Gojo Cover His Eyes?

Gojo covers his eyes not for the purpose of stealthily observing curses, but rather because of his abilities. This is because he can effortlessly defeat any curse without the need for such stealthy tactics.

Gojo is the sole sorcerer who covers his eyes for a completely different purpose. His Six Eyes grant him the ability to perceive cursed energy in great detail. This allows him to also perceive high-resolution thermography even while wearing a blindfold. Furthermore, Gojo possesses the ability to even discern objects without cursed energy, such as buildings. However, this is only possible due to the lingering presence of cursed energy.

In addition, Gojo easily becomes fatigued when he exposes his eyes. His sunglasses have the same effect for him as his blindfold, rendering ordinary people unable to see, thus serving the same purpose.

As stated in the official fanbook, Gojo chooses to wear his blindfold or shades based on his mood. Additionally, he typically wears shades when interacting with girls. Despite this being mostly a humorous gesture, in the Hidden Inventory/Premature Death Arc, we witness Gojo reveling in the attention from Riko’s classmates. However, it should be noted that Gojo’s choice to cover his eyes sets him apart from other sorcerers.
