Jujutsu Kaisen’s Most Crucial Yuji Plotline is Pointless After the Shinjuku Arc, and That’s Perfectly Fine

In Gege Akutami’s Jujutsu Kaisen manga series, one of the most significant plotlines is centered around Yuji Itadori’s execution by the jujutsu society. This particular plotline serves as the main driving force of the story, as it leads Yuji to become a part of the jujutsu world and ultimately motivates him to use his abilities to aid others, even if it results in his own demise.

Despite the progress of Jujutsu Kaisen, the focus on Yuji’s storyline has diminished. His fate has been repeatedly delayed due to the interference of Satoru Gojo and various other events. This ultimately leads to the current Shinjuku arc, in which it is revealed that all of the higher-ups in the jujutsu world have been killed.

Similarly, if he and his comrades manage to survive their confrontation with and emerge victorious against Ryomen Sukuna by the end of Jujutsu Kaisen, there will be no one to carry out his execution in the aftermath. In other words, it is highly unlikely that Yuji Itadori will face execution after these events, rendering the most significant storyline for his character in the series meaningless. Nevertheless, this does not have a negative impact on Yuji Itadori’s personal growth.

Warning: Spoilers for Jujutsu Kaisen Chapter 259 Ahead

Why the Execution of Yuji Itadori is Pointless after Jujutsu Kaisen’s Shinjuku Arc, Explained

As previously mentioned, the driving force behind Jujutsu Kaisen’s plot revolves around Yuji’s quest to collect and consume all 20 Sukuna fingers. As a compatible vessel, Yuji’s compatibility was initially unknown when he consumed the first finger. However, Satoru Gojo quickly recognized his potential and made a deal with the jujutsu Higher Ups. This deal resulted in a temporary stay of Yuji’s execution until he could consume all 20 fingers and ultimately defeat Sukuna.

In the event that Sukuna is killed while outside of Yuji’s body during the Shinjuku arc, it would render Yuji’s execution pointless. Moreover, even if the execution were to proceed, it is doubtful that the Higher Ups who initially ordered it would enforce the death sentence. And even if new Higher Ups were to be appointed, it is unlikely that any sorcerer from the current generation eligible for the title would be willing to carry out Yuji’s execution.

Similarly, the plotline has lost its purpose as Yuji is no longer in danger of facing certain death in any of the potential endings for the Shinjuku arc or the series as a whole. This is significant because his desire to assist others has been a defining trait in his character development thus far. However, with this plotline now lacking meaning, fans are wondering if Yuji’s character will also be affected.

Jujutsu Kaisen Chapter 259: Yuji Itadori’s Execution is No Longer Necessary

Due to the duties imposed upon him, Yuji has always seen himself as a mere component in a larger system, fulfilling a role that may not reveal its ultimate purpose. In his ultimate battle with nemesis Mahito, Yuji confidently states that as long as he continues to fulfill his role, the true significance of his actions will eventually become clear. He even declares that he is content to wait a hundred years for this meaning to manifest itself.

Throughout the ongoing Shinjuku arc in the series, Yuji’s mentality is characterized by his determination to fulfill his role, despite not fully comprehending how his actions will benefit others. He maintains a belief that his actions will eventually hold significance. However, in chapter 259, Yuji experiences a shift as he witnesses the sacrifice of his older brother Choso, causing him to break and reassess his beliefs. Choso gives up his life in order to protect Yuji.

Jujutsu Kaisen’s narrator makes a profound statement that challenges Yuji’s unwavering belief in fulfilling his predetermined role as a mere cog in the machine. However, after experiencing the death of Choso, Yuji comes to the realization that he no longer wants to be just a cog, but instead wants to live for himself and his friends. In essence, the story of Yuji Itadori’s execution marks a significant turning point in his character development.

Despite the significant role the Yuji plotline played in his journey thus far, the spoilers for chapter 259 confirm that it is acceptable for the execution plotline to conclude. Yuji has evolved beyond being a mere tool, and his desires have surpassed his previous mindset. As Sukuna’s demise appears to be within reach and a fresh beginning awaits, it is a thrilling moment to witness the conclusion of this Yuji plotline and anticipate what comes next.
