Actress Claudia Kim, also known as Kim Soo Hyun, is currently making waves with her comeback in Netflix’s highly-anticipated drama “The Atypical Family”. What sets her return apart is her impressive depiction of a young woman weighing 100kg.
Witnessing Claudia’s new appearance, spectators were astonished. Several were unable to even identify Claudia when she made an appearance at the drama’s press conference on May 2nd. It was later revealed that Claudia’s transformation was achieved without any actual weight gain.
The director shared the extensive process Claudia underwent to achieve this look: “She dedicated nearly 7 to 8 hours to makeup before filming, and then had to spend a significant amount of time removing it. Applying such intricate makeup on an actress’ skin may not have been easy and could have had potential consequences. I am deeply appreciative of her dedication.”
In the film “The Atypical Family,”Claudia takes on the role of Dong Hee, a character who loses her ability to fly because her body becomes too heavy. Claudia was so convincing in her performance that she didn’t even recognize herself when seeing images of her on-screen character.
Before, Claudia was renowned for her captivating physique, which played a significant role in her achievements as a model and actress in both Korea and Hollywood. However, she opted for this drastic change because she found the drama’s script to be more uplifting and compassionate compared to her previous projects.
Despite achieving Hollywood success, Claudia, a well-known actress, remains determined to make a name for herself in her home country. She was the first Korean actress to land a role in a Marvel film, starting with “Avengers: Age of Ultron” in 2015, and later appearing in “Equals” (2015), “The Dark Tower” (2017), and other projects. Her impact in Hollywood continues, but Claudia’s desire to prove herself in her homeland remains strong.
“The plot of “The Atypical Family”centers around a group of characters possessing varying supernatural powers. For instance, Dong Hee, the elder sister of the male protagonist Gwi Joo (played by Jang Ki Young), has the ability to fly, while Gwi Joo himself can only time travel to relive happy memories from his past.”
Despite Gwi Joo losing his ability due to depression and being unable to alter his circumstances even after traveling back in time, Dong Hee’s flying ability diminishes due to her struggle with food addiction. As time goes on, the rest of their family members also experience the loss of their abilities for different reasons, causing chaos and upheaval in their lives.
