In a recent controversy, girl group NewJeans came under fire for allegedly plagiarizing the concept, album design, and styling of a Mexican group known as “Jeans”. This accusation sparked widespread attention.
Despite the emergence of a new plagiarism allegation, Korean netizens have come to the defense of NewJeans on May 21.
The Korean forum Instiz featured a post titled “All idols in the world have plagiarized the Mexican group Jeans”which highlighted the similarities between numerous celebrities, such as Britney Spears and Beyoncé, and the Mexican group’s album covers and outfits.
Additionally, it was noted that the similarities can all be attributed to the Y2K aesthetics of the era, making it an overstatement to label it as “plagiarism”or “copying”.
The following are comments from Korean internet users:
- Isn’t it just a Y2K vibes…
- NewJeans is just a 21st century reinterpretation of Y2K, which was everywhere in the past
- The allegation claims are really getting more and more far-fetched
- HYBE is really trying to take NewJeans down with all their ridiculous claims
- Trends come and go, but it was NewJeans that make them popular in Korea again
- HYBE truly believes that the public is foolish.
