The recently released Netflix series includes many well-known characters from Greek mythology. However, if you have any concerns about the plot, the creator of KAOS, Charlie Covell, does not want to be informed about them.
When it comes to adapting a live-action work, there are two options to consider. Should one remain entirely loyal to the source material, or should there be room for artistic interpretation?
KAOS, a new TV show, follows the second approach by bringing together powerful figures from Greek mythology such as Zeus, Poseidon, and Medusa to craft a unique storyline. The show, now streaming on Netflix, centers around six individuals who discover their unexpected connections to the Gods.
It is natural that none of the episodes are a direct adaptation of mythological retellings, but this is not a concern for creator Charlie Covell. In fact, she is not interested in any issues that viewers may have with the show.
“I was relieved when I found out that those who saw it early on were able to catch all of the jokes and Easter eggs. It made me feel comforted to know that these people were also geeks like myself. I was unsure of what their opinion of it would be.”
Despite who you inquire with, it’s probable that we have all been told diverse renditions of stories that may or may not have included real individuals.
“According to Covell, the historical pattern has been for myths to evolve and transform. In her opinion, there is now a sense of acceptance for reimagining these tales, which aligns with tradition. She acknowledges that there may be some critics who disagree, but she welcomes their perspective.”
Each of the eight episodes of KAOS approaches these myths in a slightly different way, and this is intentional.
Covell expressed a desire for the show to appeal to both those unfamiliar with Greek myths and those who are passionate about them. It was important to her that the show be inclusive and not require any prior knowledge or research from the audience.
“I am hopeful for what may come next. I believe things could become even more grand, intense, and epic.”
