KBS, Are You Watching? Ha Yeon-soo’s “Patriotic Actions” After Her Japanese Debut + NHK Addresses the “Massacre of Innocent Koreans”

On August 15th, Ha Yeon-soo took to her Instagram to share a commemorative message in celebration of Korea’s Liberation Day. In her post, she expressed her joy at being in Korea to mark the 79th year of its liberation and the establishment of the Korean government.

Accompanying the message was a photo that showcased her dazzling beauty, with the Taegeukgi (the Korean flag) proudly fluttering in the background.

Despite the recent controversy surrounding KBS, Korea’s public broadcaster, Ha Yeon-soo’s patriotic act stands out even more. On Liberation Day, KBS faced public backlash for airing Japan’s national anthem “Kimigayo”and featuring traditional Japanese attire “kimono”. In contrast, Ha Yeon-soo’s actions shine even brighter, displaying her patriotism.

Additionally, Ha Yeon-soo unexpectedly landed a role in NHK’s drama “The Tiger and Her Wings”, marking her official debut in Japan. The drama premiered on April 1st and has currently aired 99 episodes.

Ha Yeon-soo portrays Choi Hyang-suk, a Korean student who embarks on a journey to Japan in pursuit of becoming a lawyer in the drama.

Significantly, the drama received considerable recognition in its 87th episode last month, which specifically tackled the issue of the massacre of Koreans during the 1923 Great Kanto Earthquake. This depiction is particularly significant due to Japan’s inclination to manipulate and obscure its historical background. NHK’s uncommon decision has sparked a strong reaction from Japanese audiences, particularly because the episode conveyed the message that “innocent Koreans were killed as a result of a false rumor accusing them of instigating a rebellion”.
