At CCXP 2024, Secret Level captured the spotlight with the unveiling of a new clip featuring Keanu Reeves in an episode inspired by the iconic video game series Armored Core. Interestingly, Reeves’ participation in this animated project was not a sure thing from the start.
Secret Level, crafted by the visionary team behind Netflix’s acclaimed anthology series Love, Death & Robots, serves as a tribute to the world of video gaming. Each of its 15 episodes delves into the essence of a specific game. While Reeves’ involvement had been hinted at since October 2024, the recent footage showcasing his role has sparked considerable excitement among fans.
Keanu Joined at a Late Stage
In a recent interview, creator Tim Miller revealed that Reeves initially reached out to discuss a different animated film. He expressed his admiration for Love, Death & Robots, stating, “I love animation,”and was keen to learn more about it.
During their discussion about the forthcoming Secret Level, Miller asked Keanu if there was a specific role he desired to play. With a laid-back attitude, Reeves simply replied, “No, just put me in coach.” However, when Miller consulted executive producer Dave Wilson regarding the possibility of including Reeves, Wilson initially thought it was a joke until he later encountered a video of Reeves at the studio.
Integrating Reeves into the already impressive lineup of voice talent posed a challenge. “Keanu actually came on quite late in the series,”Wilson recalled. “We had all the artwork displayed, but there were very few roles remaining to fill. I was receiving audition tapes from other actors, and I thought, ‘Tim, I don’t have any roles left.’”
Despite the challenges, the team successfully incorporated Keanu Reeves into an action-packed episode centered on Armored Core, much to the thrill of viewers.
