Keanu Reeves Hopes to Complete Iconic ’90s Action Franchise

It has been disclosed by Keanu Reeves that he is eager to make a third installment of the ’90s film franchise Speed, alongside Sandra Bullock.

Reeves and Bullock are both eager to reunite on screen, as the actor recently shared his desire to create a third installment of the popular Speed franchise.

During a joint interview on the 50 MPH podcast, Reeves was asked about his thoughts on teaming up with Sandra Bullock for Speed 3. He replied, “I believe we would absolutely excel in that role.”

In the 1994 film Speed, Officer Jack Traven (Reeves) and civilian Annie Porter (Bullock) team up to prevent a city bus from dropping below 50 miles per hour. Failure to maintain the speed will result in the explosion of the bomb attached to the bus.

Despite having a budget of only $30 to $37 million, the movie was a huge success upon its debut, earning $350.4 million worldwide and even winning two Oscars.

Due to its success, a sequel to the movie, titled Speed 2: Cruise Control, was approved. However, only Bullock agreed to reprise her role in it.

During an appearance on The Graham Norton Show, Reeves revealed that he had declined the opportunity to star in the film due to his concerns about the script. Although he had enjoyed working with Sandra Bullock and playing Jack Traven in the first “Speed”movie, the idea of an ocean liner setting did not appeal to him. He emphasized that he had no issues with the other artists involved, but at the time, he simply felt that the project was not the right fit for him.

Despite its predecessor’s success, Cruise Control did not achieve the same level of financial success, earning only $164 million globally, which was still $4 million over its budget.

Despite being made with a significantly higher budget than its predecessor, the sequel received negative reviews from critics. One reviewer wrote, “They spent double, maybe even four times as much as they did on Speed…and it’s terrible.”

Even though they were not fond of the sequel, fans have been demanding a third movie for years now, with hopes of witnessing the chemistry between Reeves and Bullock once again. The on-screen dynamic between the two actors was a major highlight of the film, a fact that both of them recognize.

During the interview, Reeves reflected on the strong bond between the characters. “There was definitely an affection there,”he stated. “And I believe Jack and Annie’s dynamic was distinct from Sandra and Keanu’s, yet we all had a great dynamic and it was enjoyable. We also had a strong sense of trust in each other, didn’t we?”

Bullock reiterated this sentiment, explaining that due to constantly battling the elements, she and her co-star did not have many opportunities to make eye contact on set. However, this contributed to the electric dynamic of the film, and the deliberate decision to keep their characters apart created a clever form of foreplay for the audience.

“I had a strong sense of ease with Keanu. He was always supportive and open to any ideas or actions I wanted to try. This type of trust is not often found among actors. Whenever I presented something to him, he responded positively, making me feel like he was truly my partner.”

Despite the possibility of not reuniting for Speed 3, both Reeves and Bullock have expressed their desire to work together on another project. During a conversation, Reeves told Bullock, “I would love for our paths to cross again before our time is up.”
