Kerbal Space Program 2 review bombed after Take-Two shuts down developer

After Take-Two Interactive forced the closure of the development studio responsible for the game, the sequel to Kerbal Space Program has been bombarded with negative reviews on Steam.

According to a report by Bloomberg, Take-Two has made the decision to permanently shut down two of its subsidiaries as part of a larger round of layoffs. Among those affected are Roll7, the creators of OlliOlli World and Rollerdrome, and Intercept Games, the developers of Kerbal Space Program 2. This news has sparked disappointment and backlash from fans.

The Kerbal Space Program is a unique game that stands out from the rest, offering an incredibly impressive simulation of space flight. It allows gamers to construct and personalize ships in an effort to assist the Kerbals, a nation of small green individuals.

Despite the excitement among players of the original game, the sequel has faced challenges during its Early Access phase. The December 2023 update was seen as a promising milestone, with many improvements and additions to the game, but the recent setback has caused concern for its future.

Despite the recent closure of the development studio, the game currently holds a Mixed review rating on Steam. The most recent reviews are categorized as Overwhelmingly Negative, largely from frustrated fans of the game.

The outlook for Kerbal Space Program 2 appears increasingly grim after a comment from Take-Two representative Alan Lewis in an interview with GamesIndustry.biz.

“On 16th April, Take-Two revealed plans for a cost reduction program aimed at identifying efficiencies within the company and improving its margin profile, all while continuing to invest in growth. As a result, the company will be reassessing its pipeline and discontinuing several projects currently in development, as well as streamlining its organizational structure to reduce headcount and limit future hiring needs.”

Despite the reported elimination of multiple projects, fans may still be concerned about the future of the project. However, it has been stated that development will continue under Private Division, the indie division of Take-Two, providing some reassurance.
