Kevin Costner’s upcoming series, Horizon: An American Saga, will span four installments with a total runtime of 11 hours. However, Costner is not worried about the length of the show.
It is common for Western films to have long runtimes, and this is typically expected for the top movies in this genre. For example, Costner’s Dances With Wolves had a three-hour runtime (originally a five and a half hour cut) and is considered one of the most highly acclaimed Westerns of modern times. It won seven Academy Awards and is credited with revitalizing the genre.
Horizon: An American Saga is not aiming to be a delicate historical account. Throughout the planned four-film series, Costner’s main priority is creating a powerful final product, rather than worrying about what viewers can handle.
In a frank interview with Deadline, he revealed his ongoing indecision about the runtime, ultimately stating that he is not concerned with others’ opinions.
“My initial focus is on the visual aspects of the movie, and then I work on maximizing its potential,”he explained. “I first screened the movie at 3:15. The first cut was 3:52, and at that point, I wasn’t sure how to trim it down to just five minutes. However, I managed to bring it down to 3:29, then 3:24, and eventually 3:15. After screening it in Vegas, I was able to further reduce it to 3:06. At that point, I didn’t think I could cut it any shorter. But I was able to bring it down to under three hours, and now it stands at 2:45. However
Upon hearing the interviewer’s remark about the length of his upcoming Civil War drama, Costner retorted, “I couldn’t care less about your opinion on whether 2:50 is the ideal length for my movie.”
With the premiere of the film at Cannes scheduled for this year, Costner is determined to ensure that the final edit is flawless. Currently, he is still testing different versions to achieve perfection.
“I plan on reinserting some necessary items and testing to see if it improves the situation,”he explained. “However, if I still feel the same way at 2:45 as I did at 2:30, then I will make the change for 2:30. I understand your point, the most challenging part was reaching 2:40. And when I asked you to be quiet, it was just a joke. I do take all of this into consideration because it is my responsibility. Of course, I would love to have a screen time that allows me to watch an extra show every day. No one would appreciate that more than me.”
Regarding Horizon: Chapter 2, the duration has yet to be confirmed as Costner mentioned, “The second installment is not finalized. I am still considering some edits.”
