Kevin Costner’s Upcoming Movie Announcement – Surprising Genre, Not a Western

Once Kevin Costner wraps up his ambitious historical epic, he plans to shift gears and explore a new cinematic genre.

Renowned as one of the finest actors in Western films, his upcoming project will unfold in Bali, centering around the thrilling world of surfing.

In this film, Costner portrays a enigmatic American expatriate named Lazer, who relocates to Bali. He teams up with surfers and a photographer to hunt for the ultimate wave on a secluded island, only to stumble upon the territory of a tribe of headhunters.

The film is described as combining “the dynamic spirit of surf culture with elements of horror,” according to the official synopsis.

Currently, Kevin Costner is focused on completing his Horizon saga

The story promises an adventurous survival tale filled with epic bloodshed on a tropical island once perceived as paradise—yet lurking beneath the surface is something far more sinister.

The project, titled Headhunters, is produced under Costner’s own production company, Territory Pictures, in collaboration with producer Scott Steindorff.

Steindorff shared, “For years, Kevin and I have been on the lookout for the perfect project to work on together. This script is one of the finest I’ve encountered throughout my career. Kevin is a legendary actor who infuses tremendous depth and charisma into his performances, and his collaboration with Steve has resulted in an unforgettable horror screenplay.”

While Costner won’t take on directing duties, that role will be filled by Steven Holleran, making his debut as a feature director after previously working as a cinematographer on Missing.

Joining Costner in this thrilling endeavor is Daniel Zovatto, known for his role in Station Eleven.

Costner Remains Dedicated to Horizon

Regarding Horizon: An American Saga, Costner is still committed to finalizing his four-part narrative.

Headhunters is expected to be released after the completion of the Western saga, although the status of Horizon Parts 3 and 4 remains uncertain.

The second installment had been slated for an August debut but was removed from the Warner Bros. schedule, leaving its new release date up in the air.

At the 2024 Venice Film Festival, Costner expressed his commitment with emotion, stating to reporters, “I’m not sure how I will complete the third part right now, but I am determined to do it.”

If a fourth installment of Horizon comes to fruition, Costner anticipates that the total production cost of the series could exceed $100 million.
