Kevin Feige shares update on upcoming R-rated movie in MCU after Deadpool & Wolverine

Kevin Feige has announced that Blade will be the next Marvel Cinematic Universe film to receive an R rating, following in the footsteps of Deadpool and Wolverine.

Thanks to its graphic violence, foul language, and suggestive content, Deadpool & Wolverine is the first R-rated film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

As Deadpool is famously referred to as the Merc with a Mouth, it should not be surprising to hear that the new movie allegedly contains over 100 instances of the f-word in its two-hour duration.

Undoubtedly, the projected success of Deadpool and Wolverine at the box office brings about inquiries regarding the fate of future R-rated projects in the MCU. Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige has already disclosed the next movie to join the ranks – Blade.

At approximately 2:56 in the video below, Feige references Blade.

In an interview with ComingSoon, Feige explained that the R rating for Deadpool & Wolverine was due to the previous two movies.

Additionally, he emphasized that deviating from this approach would have failed to deliver on the character’s identity and the essence that Ryan Reynolds brings to his performance.

This same philosophy also applies to the MCU’s Blade, which is why it is planned to eventually be released in theaters with an R rating.

Feige clarified that the development of a new Blade movie has been a long process. He stated that the original movies were R-rated, which is an essential aspect of the Blade character. As a result, the new movie being developed will also be R-rated.

He continued by stating that the MCU will only receive R ratings when it is appropriate.

Without considering the specifics of the rating, the question of when Blade will make its way back to the big screen remains uncertain. During SDCC 2019, Marvel announced the movie and revealed that Mahershala Ali would be playing the titular character.

Afterwards, the long-awaited project saw the departure of two creative leads, leading to the replacement of its original director, Bassam Tariq, by Yann Demange in June 2024. As of now, Marvel Studios has not yet revealed who will take over from Demange.
