The incident occurred in a horrifying manner, intensifying the heart-wrenching aspect. This raises the question – was his death justified?
The Importance of Killing Choso in Jujutsu Kaisen’s Final Arc
The death of Choso
The most recent installment of Jujutsu Kaisen’s final arc, chapter 258, ended on a suspenseful note as Sukuna prepared to unleash his powerful Flaming Arrow. Spoilers for the upcoming chapter reveal that he successfully unleashes the attack, targeting Yuji Itadori. As the fate of the Demon King hangs in the balance, Choso is acutely aware of the importance of Yuji’s survival.
Despite his efforts to protect his little brother, he ultimately resorts to encasing him in a mysterious blood barrier. This barrier proves to be strong enough to withstand Sukuna’s attack, demonstrating Choso’s own formidable power. Although he successfully shields Yuji, he is unable to do the same for himself, and as a result, he is consumed by the intense flames and burned to a crisp.
As the barrier dissolved and the flames consumed him, a broken Yuji clung to Choso, pleading for him to remain. In their final moments in the Soul Realm, the two exchanged a few words. Choso apologized for being a inadequate teacher and expressed his desire to make amends with Yuki Ysukumo as well. He then joined his brothers, Eso and Kechizu.
Was Choso’s death necessary?
Choso has solidified his position as a significant character in Jujutsu Kaisen before the final arc. Despite not being part of the main cast, his role as a support has been crucial. From his initial desire to avenge his brothers, who were taken away by Yuji, to his eventual willingness to sacrifice himself for Yuji’s sake, Choso has undergone notable character development.
As previously mentioned, it was crucial for Yuji to survive and Choso was fully aware of this. Given that Yuji had recently discovered his powers and was still inexperienced in controlling his Cursed Energy (CE), Choso knew he had to take action. Therefore, in the final arc of Jujutsu Kaisen, he made the ultimate sacrifice, staying true to his promise to Yuki.
However, Choso’s death ultimately propels Yuji towards victory in terms of relevance. This event mirrors the Shibuya Incident, when Nobara Kugisaki tragically lost her life. Despite being devastated, Yuji was able to bounce back and tap into 120% of his potential. And once again, it was Todo who inspired and motivated him.
Furthermore, it should be noted that Sukuna had been planning and preparing for the use of Divine Flames. However, his ultimate attack has left him vulnerable and exposed, providing the perfect opportunity for the brothers to strike. Therefore, Choso’s sacrifice in the concluding arc of Jujutsu Kaisen is undoubtedly not without purpose.
Final thoughts
The death of Choso in the final arc of Jujutsu Kaisen has unquestionably left a lasting impact. Throughout the series, he was a character who developed alongside the plot. His crucial role in teaching Yuji the art of Blood Manipulation was instrumental in the pink-haired teenager’s ability to survive the intense battle against Sukuna.
The main motive behind Akutami’s decision to kill Choso in the final arc of Jujutsu Kaisen is most likely to deplete Sukuna’s arsenal. Additionally, the loss of a beloved character also adds to the shock value.
Just like Nobara, this will likely serve as motivation for Yuji to use all of his remaining strength to defeat the Demon King, who appears to have no defense against him.
