In the latest episode of tvN’s popular variety show The Ways of Tasting, aired on November 17th, talented actresses Lee Ji-ah and Kim Go-eun took on the delightful task of crafting a gourmet column focused on whiskey.

Initially, the duo expressed apprehension at the thought of writing. “Record something? Is it heavy? We thought we’d just be tasting,” Kim Go-eun quipped, jokingly suggesting that perhaps it would be better to leave the challenge altogether due to her lack of confidence. She humorously nudged Lee Ji-ah, claiming, “You have some expertise with whiskey, so you should take the lead.”

Since both admitted their limited knowledge about whiskey, they sought guidance from a seasoned expert. The whiskey connoisseur explained that, fundamentally, whiskey consists of only three core ingredients: water, yeast, and grains, with single malt whiskey typically made from barley.

During their enlightening conversation, the expert stressed the significance of aerating whiskey. He advised, “Whiskey is at its peak right after opening. Storing it in a closet is crucial because if it’s visible, you may be tempted to indulge.” This prompted Lee Ji-ah to humorously confess, “We always finish a new bottle in one sitting!”

Kim Go-eun echoed this sentiment, “I’ve never stored alcohol in a closet,”while Lee Ji-ah added, “We’d probably need a lock to keep it secure and stash the key away.”

The first pairing on their culinary adventure featured halibut carpaccio drizzled with lemon vinaigrette. Later, while enjoying a delectable Shine Muscat shortcake, Lee Ji-ah remarked on the quality of the ingredients, noting, “They used 100% animal-based fresh cream,” which took everyone by surprise.

After tasting the whiskey pairings, the production team prompted the actresses to encapsulate their flavor experience in a single phrase. Lee Ji-ah humorously replied, “I love the food, but it does make me anxious.” Meanwhile, Kim Go-eun reflected, “I’ve gained some insights into how whiskey complements food,” but then sighed deeply, adding, “I just miss my mom.”

The Ways of Tasting showcases the culinary journeys of Lee Ji-ah and Kim Go-eun as they discover exquisite dining experiences and whiskey pairings across renowned restaurants and bars in Korea and Taiwan, aimed at enlightening audiences about the rich tapestry of gourmet culture.
