Kim Heechul Opens Up About His Disability on “My Little Old Boy”
During the January 12 episode of SBS’s popular show “My Little Old Boy” , viewers witnessed an emotional moment as Kim Heechul accompanied fellow cast member Kim Jongmin, who recently announced his marriage, to see a shaman. This visit revealed surprising insights about Heechul’s past and his current state of health.
Critical Predictions from the Shaman
The shaman offered a striking perspective on Heechul’s life, stating, “Your life is like a bonus. You faced a critical moment in your 20s.” This statement led Heechul to reveal his traumatic experience from that period, sharing, “I had a major car accident back then.” The shaman then warned, “Your body’s balance was destroyed. Be careful this July. You must take extra caution in the summer. If you break a bone or get a fracture, you could end up with a permanent disability.”
Kim Jongmin, visibly concerned, responded, “That’s serious.” In a moment of vulnerability, Heechul shocked everyone by disclosing, “I’ve never mentioned this before, but I’m actually disabled.”
Reflections on a Life-Altering Accident
Kim Heechul recounted the details of his significant accident in 2006, saying, “There’s a disability sticker for cars. I went to get it with my manager but decided not to take it, thinking ‘No, I need to live a more active life,’ and turned back without it.” This refusal to accept his situation reflects his desire to maintain a sense of normalcy and independence despite his condition.
Heechul’s journey has been marked by internal struggles. He admitted, “I didn’t want to admit my body was in pain. I thought I could overcome it, and now it’s been 10 years. I also didn’t tell my fans because I didn’t want them to feel sad hearing that their oppa had a disability grade.”
A Mother’s Heartfelt Memories
His mother shared fond yet painful memories from that challenging time, stating, “Even now, it brings tears to my eyes. It’s better now, but when he performed on stage, his legs hurt so much. His bones were crushed, and his femur was damaged, so they had to put in metal rods.” She reflected on the struggles her son faced during recovery and performance.
She further recounted how doctors initially doubted Heechul’s ability to dance again, saying, “The doctor said he wouldn’t be able to dance again, but after surgery, he could. Still, the pain made it difficult for him.”
A Hopeful Outlook from the Shaman
Despite the gravity of his circumstances, the shaman concluded with an optimistic note, stating, “Kim Heechul will live a long life because he survived a near-death experience.” This prophecy serves as a hopeful reminder of resilience in the face of adversity.
