In 2022, Kim Jong-kook used his YouTube channel to openly discuss his feelings about his military service. It was revealed that his father had served for 23 years as an army captain and had also been a veteran of the Vietnam War, earning him national recognition.
According to the current military service law, an individual with a parent of national merit is eligible for a special military service benefit. This benefit allows them to serve as a public service worker for six months, regardless of their physical examination results from the Military Manpower Administration. It is reported that Kim Jong-kook’s father purposely delayed his application for national merit in order to ensure his son’s proper military service.
Despite being only 20 years old, Kim was unable to serve in active duty due to a severe herniated disc. As a result, he served as a public service worker, which garnered criticism due to his habit of flaunting his muscular physique and strength on television.
Upon hearing this, Kim Jong-look expressed, “I have never imagined that the word ‘military’ would bring shame to my life.”He continued, “My father served as a soldier and is now recognized as a national hero. The military has always been a source of pride for me, and I never expected to feel ashamed of it.”
Kim Jong-kook remembered his health situation during that time, stating, “The hospital staff even remarked that my body should be featured in a medical textbook.”After he shared his experience, certain fans showed sympathy and stood by him, taking into account his sincere admission and his father’s contributions to the nation. They countered the backlash by highlighting his service as a public servant due to health issues and his father’s unwavering devotion to his country. However, there were still skeptics who questioned Kim Jong-kook’s role as a public servant, citing his muscular physique and tough persona displayed on television.
At the moment, Kim Jong-kook is 44 years old and his father is currently 79 years old.
