Kim Junsu, the renowned singer and musical theater performer, recently made an appearance on the MBC entertainment show ‘Radio Star,’ where he engagingly shared numerous anecdotes. This particular episode was themed as a ‘Short Form Star K’ special, allowing Kim to discuss candidly his journey in musical theater as well as personal highlights from his life.
Reflecting on his time with the K-pop group TVXQ (known as DBSK), Kim Junsu detailed how they became the first Asian male ensemble to achieve the top spot on Japan’s Oricon chart, along with their numerous accolades in South Korea.
However, the emergence of BIGBANG as a formidable competitor introduced some uncertainty for him.
“At one point, we chose to concentrate solely on the Japanese market and went on a two-year hiatus in Korea. That was when BIGBANG came onto the scene. Initially, we were not overly concerned since we frequently faced new rivals, but upon witnessing their performance of ‘Lies’, I was genuinely impressed. We had intricate choreography, yet BIGBANG exuded a sense of freedom and style. It was the first time I felt a sense of urgency,” the singer and actor confessed.
This competitive environment ultimately inspired the creation of TVXQ’s chart-topping song “Mirotic.” According to Junsu, the original plan was to continue focusing their promotions in Japan, but they returned to Korea ahead of schedule.
During the interview, Kim Junsu also shared a personal insight regarding how, despite his significant financial success in the realm of musical theater, people often viewed him sympathetically during times when he was not on television. At one point in his life, he owned an impressive collection of 15 luxury sports cars, earning him the nickname “Rich Oppa.”
He reflected, “Despite a 100-fold increase in my earnings, I felt pitied by those around me for not appearing on screen. This really bothered me and led me to want to flaunt my wealth. However, over time, my work gained recognition, and I came to understand that I didn’t need to parade material possessions to validate myself.”
In a lighthearted moment, he mentioned purchasing a 24K gold-plated bed, similar to the one owned by Donald Trump, but has since downsized his car collection to just three and moved away from such extravagant expenditures.
