Legal Conflict Erupts Between Kim Soo-hyun and Kim Sae-ron’s Family

The ongoing legal dispute involving actor Kim Soo-hyun and the family of late actress Kim Sae-ron has escalated dramatically, now encompassing the nation’s National Forensic Service (NFS). The conflict followed the Seoul Eastern District Court’s ruling on May 20, which authorized the provisional seizure of property owned by Kim Soo-hyun, valued at ₩3 billion KRW (approximately $2.2 million USD).

This request for seizure originated from CLASSYS, a medical device company that had previously appointed Kim as the spokesperson for its brand, Volnewmer, before the controversy arose. The implications of this legal struggle are extensive, raising questions about reputations and financial liability.

Legal representation for Kim Soo-hyun, attorney Bang Sung-hoon from LKB & Partners, provided insight into the situation: “While it is accurate that the provisional seizure has been granted, Kim Soo Hyun is the victim of malicious slander orchestrated by the Garo Sero Institute. Their unsubstantiated allegations claiming that Kim was involved in inappropriate conduct with the underage Kim Sae Ron are unfounded.”

In an effort to counter these accusations, Kim’s legal team has requested a forensic examination by the NFS to assess the credibility of audio files and chat messages purportedly disseminated by the Garo Sero Institute. These alleged pieces of “evidence” include edited KakaoTalk messages, voice recordings, and photographs that supposedly indicate a relationship between Kim and Kim Sae Ron during her youth.

Kim Soo Hyun maintains that any romantic involvement commenced in 2019, when Kim Sae Ron had reached the legal age, and concluded in 2020. However, the Garo Sero Institute and the Sae Ron family contend that the relationship began as early as late 2015 and persisted until mid-2021.

The repercussions of the defamation claims are significant. Alongside CLASSYS, three additional companies have initiated lawsuits against Kim, seeking damages totaling roughly ₩3.3 billion KRW. In retaliation, Kim Soo Hyun has filed a counter-lawsuit for ₩11 billion KRW against the Garo Sero Institute and Kim Sae Ron’s family, alleging defamation and invasion of privacy. He has also lodged criminal complaints under sexual violence laws and the Information and Communications Network Act against Kim Se-ui, the leader of the Garo Sero Institute, leading to court-sanctioned seizures of Kim Se-ui’s assets and accounts.

In response to these growing tensions, Kim Sae Ron’s family has launched their own legal action, accusing Kim Soo Hyun of breaching child welfare laws and filing a false report.

As the situation intensifies, Kim Soo Hyun’s supporters have started a boycott against brands like CLASSYS to express solidarity with the actor, indicating strong public sentiment surrounding the case.
