Examining the Kim Soo-hyun Legal Case: Key Issues and Controversies
On March 31, during the KBS News program “News Line W“, attorney Lee Go-eun provided a comprehensive overview of the ongoing legal dispute surrounding Kim Soo-hyun. The discussion outlined the principal arguments from both sides, shedding light on the potential trajectory of this prominent case.

During a press conference that coincided with the broadcast, Kim Soo-hyun categorically denied all allegations, stating, “I never had a relationship with the deceased (Kim Sae-ron) when she was a minor.” He specifically addressed claims surrounding the KakaoTalk messages allegedly exchanged between him and the bereaved family, declaring that “these messages appear to be fabricated.” This assertion was backed by a linguistic pattern analysis, which he argued confirmed that he was not the individual in those messages. Kim emphasized, “Compared to my recent communications, that person in the submitted messages does not resemble me at all.”

Nevertheless, the legal validity of the linguistic pattern analysis presented by Kim’s team remains questionable. Attorney Lee Go-eun pointed out, “The ‘testimony analysis’ approach used by investigative bodies typically evaluates the credibility of a victim’s claims. Simply comparing speech patterns in KakaoTalk messages is unlikely to be deemed robust evidence on its own.”
The bereaved family responded assertively, stating, “The KakaoTalk messages are original and entirely unaltered. We still have the originals intact.” This assertion indicates the potential for a forensic examination to be conducted to resolve the conflict over message authenticity.

Another pivotal issue lies in the ₩700 million damages related to Kim Sae-ron’s 2022 DUI incident. The bereaved family alleges that the debt pressures were a contributing factor to her tragic passing. Conversely, Kim Soo-hyun has countered this claim by releasing a recorded phone conversation between their respective agencies. He insisted that the call served merely as a formal notice, devoid of any pressure.
The audio recording included dialogue where a representative stated, “The documents were required due to concerns about ‘breach of duty’.Please ensure a response by the deadline.” This exchange could potentially undermine the bereaved family’s assertions.

Simultaneously, Kim Soo-hyun has initiated legal actions comprising a ₩12 billion damage suit and a criminal complaint against the bereaved family and the Garo Sero Institute, a YouTube channel. The bereaved family firmly maintained, “The KakaoTalk messages were not falsified. We have not made any false claims.”
As both parties remain embroiled in a contentious dispute, the ultimate resolution will likely depend on scientific analysis and judicial deliberations. Public interest remains high as observers eagerly anticipate the conclusion of this legal saga and the possible repercussions on both Kim Soo-hyun’s reputation and the bereaved family’s claims.
