Recognized as Korea’s most significant arts celebration, this event highlights exceptional contributions across a variety of artistic domains, encompassing domestic and international culture, music, television, film, musicals, and theater.

Posthumous Grand Prize Awarded to Kim Soo-mi

This year’s Grand Prize was awarded posthumously to the beloved actress Kim Soo-mi, following her recognition with a Special Achievement Award at the 2024 Seoul International Film Awards just five days earlier. Her daughter-in-law, actress Seo Hyo-rim, graciously accepted the award in her absence.

Emotional Acceptance Speech

Comedian and host Yoo Jae-pil honored Kim Soo-mi’s memory, stating, “She has become a star in the heavens, forever residing in our hearts.” Dressed in a black gown, Seo Hyo-rim addressed the audience, identifying herself as “Kim Soo-mi’s daughter-in-law.” Faced with a heavy heart, she remarked, “Accepting this award on behalf of someone who has passed is truly difficult.”

Seo Hyo-rim went on to reflect on the upcoming 49th-day memorial service, sharing, “Our family, overwhelmed by the shock of her loss, has not had the opportunity to properly mourn as we’ve been preoccupied with daily responsibilities. While going through her belongings, we stumbled upon an old diary that revealed the tender and delicate aspects of Kim Soo-mi’s life. I promise to live well and honor the legacy left by so many who loved her.”

A Fond Farewell

Kim Soo-mi passed away on October 25, 2024, at the age of 75 due to complications from high blood sugar shock. Her funeral service was held two days later at Hanyang University Hospital in Seongdong-gu, Seoul, attended by family and close associates in the entertainment industry, including her husband, Jeong Chang-gyu, son Jeong Myung-ho, daughter-in-law Seo Hyo-rim, and granddaughter.

In a poignant moment, Seo Hyo-rim tearfully expressed her sentiments, saying, “Mom, I’m sorry, don’t go,” and “How could you leave after suffering so much?” This heartfelt scene resonated deeply, reminding many of the close bond shared by Kim Soo-mi and her daughter-in-law, who portrayed a mother-daughter duo on-screen. Kim Soo-mi once famously remarked, “I liked Seo Hyo-rim so much that I made my son marry her,” showcasing her deep affection for Hyo-rim.

A Life Well-Lived

Born in 1949, Kim Soo-mi began her illustrious career in 1970 as part of MBC’s actor open recruitment. Over the years, she made significant contributions to Korean dramas, television programs, and theatrical performances, earning her place as a cherished figure in the industry.
