The Seoul Seocho Police Department reported that Kim Soo-mi experienced a sudden cardiac arrest and was taken to Seoul St. Mary’s Hospital in Seocho-gu at around 8 AM on October 25th, where she was later pronounced dead.
Kim Soo-mi, born in 1949, had paused her professional engagements in May due to severe fatigue. During that period, she was admitted to Hanyang University Hospital in Seongdong-gu, Seoul, as doctors advised her to rest amidst her demanding schedule of performances and broadcasting. Despite her health challenges, she had recently returned to work, making appearances on home shopping channels.
In September, worries about her well-being emerged when a user on an online forum commented on her appearance during a home shopping broadcast, mentioning, “Her face seems swollen, her hands are shaking, and her speech is slow, which is alarming.”
In defense of his mother, her son Jung Myung-ho, who works as a director at Napalkkot F&B, reassured Xports News, stating, “Kim Soo-mi has never ceased her broadcasting efforts. She was hospitalized for two days in July and has since been consistently filming.” The home shopping network clarified that the broadcast was recorded earlier, suggesting her questionable condition could be attributed to the hurried overnight shooting schedule.
Up until her hospitalization, Kim was actively participating in the musical “My Mother” and making numerous appearances on various programs, including tvN Story’s “The Village Presidents People” and KBS 2TV’s “Boss In The Mirror.”
The announcement of her death has profoundly affected her close friends in the entertainment industry. Actor Tak Jae-hoon, often described as Kim Soo-mi’s “favorite son,” received the news late while he was overseas filming SBS’s “Dolsing Fourmen.” The two shared a strong, mother-son-like bond that formed during their collaborations in films like “Marrying The Mafia II” (2005) and “Barefoot Ki Bong” (2006), and most recently on “Marrying The Mafia: Returns” (2023).
Actor Shin Hyun-joon expressed immense sorrow upon learning of her passing, reportedly becoming too emotional to communicate effectively during a conversation with OSEN News, underlining the significant influence Kim Soo-mi had on those around her.
