Kim Soo-mi’s Touching Love Message to Daughter-in-Law: “I’ll Provide a House, Feel Free to Divorce if Times Get Tough”

The emotional farewell from Seo Hyo-rim, the daughter-in-law of the late actress Kim Soo-mi, resonated deeply with everyone present. Their strong bond, forged through mutual respect as actresses and familial ties, made the occasion profoundly poignant.

Kim Soo-mi’s funeral took place on October 27 at 11 AM at Hanyang University Hospital, located in Seoul’s Seongdong-gu. Family members and close friends from the entertainment industry, who held Kim Soo-mi dear, congregated to pay their last respects. The sight of Seo Hyo-rim tearfully bidding her mother-in-law goodbye was particularly heart-wrenching, as she had always lovingly referred to Kim Soo-mi as “Mom.”

Seo Hyo-rim wed Kim Soo-mi’s son, Jung Myung-ho, CEO of Napalkkot F&B, in 2019, and together they welcomed a daughter. Throughout her life, Kim Soo-mi regarded Seo Hyo-rim not merely as a daughter-in-law, but with heartfelt affection, embracing her as part of the family. Their relationship was so close that they often engaged in long conversations, sometimes stretching to two hours. Seo Hyo-rim revealed, “I was connected with my mother-in-law even before our marriage; we would share stories, including about my past boyfriends. We bonded easily due to our similar interests.”

News surfaced about Kim Soo-mi gifting Seo Hyo-rim a house, causing quite a stir. During an interview, Kim Soo-mi explained, “Two years after my daughter-in-law’s marriage, my son was entangled in a media scandal over a fraud case, although he was later vindicated. I worried about the emotional toll it could take on my daughter-in-law, so I decided to give her my house.”

She further elaborated, “If their circumstances were to change and they divorced, I wanted her to have financial stability, as the legal compensation she would receive is only 50 million won. My intention was for her to live comfortably with her child using that money. It was a heartfelt conversation between two individuals, though it was a hypothetical scenario. Thankfully, they are very happy together now. I strive to offer my daughter-in-law the same kindness I experienced from my own mother-in-law.”

Kim Soo-mi’s affection for her mother-in-law was well-documented as well. Having lost her parents at a young age and having endured a tumultuous marriage, she eventually found love with her current husband. It was three years into their relationship that she decided to marry, deeply touched by the compassion shown by her future mother-in-law. Kim Soo-mi recounted how her mother-in-law comforted her during painful times, saying, “You must have faced many challenges without your parents. Your forehead reveals your warmth and compassion.”

Despite the affection from her mother-in-law, Kim Soo-mi also faced significant challenges due to her husband’s behavior. Kim Soo-mi recalled her mother-in-law’s words: “He grew up pampered as he’s an only child, so he tends to be immature. Please support him.” Reflecting on this, Kim Soo-mi admitted, “I initially thought she was being too modest, only to realize how true it was during the early stages of our marriage.”

At one point, her mother-in-law even suggested divorce. Kim Soo-mi shared, “Before I had my second child, my mother-in-law urged me, saying, ‘Soo-mi, it seems futile to continue; perhaps you should consider a divorce. I’ll make sure you never face financial hardship, even if you leave the entertainment field,’ and gifted me a building in Sinsa-dong. She encouraged me to find happiness while I’m still young. I responded, ‘Mom, I can’t leave you. I wish to stay with you.’”

Tragically, Kim Soo-mi lost her mother-in-law due to a suspected accidental car incident, which left her devastated. She recounted how her driver had started their new car, which unexpectedly rolled backward, hitting her mother-in-law as she was putting up posters for Kim Soo-mi’s play. This horrific event left Kim Soo-mi in a state of shock, prompting her to contemplate embracing Buddhism. She mourned for three years yet continued to cherish the love her mother-in-law had given her, which she ensured to pass on to her daughter-in-law.

Widely regarded as a generous soul, Kim Soo-mi exhibited this same kindness toward Seo Hyo-rim. Seo Hyo-rim fondly recounted, “When we were merely colleagues, she playfully remarked, ‘Who would ever want to marry someone like you?’ To which Kim Soo-mi responded, ‘Who could possibly tolerate someone like you?’” This exchange brought laughter to those around them. Additionally, Seo Hyo-rim mentioned, “She would even advise male actors not to pursue me, joking that it would ruin their lives.”

Kim Soo-mi embraced Seo Hyo-rim as though she were a dear sister, sharing moments about their wardrobes with delight, frequently inquiring about their recent purchases and trying each other’s outfits. Though Seo Hyo-rim has long legs, they coincidentally wear the same size. When Kim Soo-mi would ask to borrow something, Seo Hyo-rim would quip, “Mom, you can’t take these pants,” but would ultimately buy her new ones for her birthday. The bond they formed transcends even death.

On October 25, at the age of 75, Kim Soo-mi passed away. Cardiac arrest stemming from hyperglycemic shock was cited as her cause of death. She was laid to rest at Honor Stone, Yongin.
