Kim So-yeon Challenges Taboos by Selling Adult Toys in K-drama “Quiet Sales”

The K-drama “Quiet Sales” centers on the lives of four women who engage in the door-to-door sale of adult toys in a rural village in Jeolla Province during the 1990s, a time when discussions about sexuality were often considered taboo. Known as the “Bangpan Sisters,” these women come from diverse backgrounds and have various motivations for joining this unconventional business. Through their journey, they not only gain financial independence but also forge meaningful friendships.

While desires are universal, they are often hidden and not openly discussed. For instance, many women secretly seek knowledge about enhancing their sexual lives, such as tips on “How to have a passionate night with your husband?” by disguising their inquiries as reading recipes in women’s magazines.

The four members of the “Bangpan Sisters” open themselves to a vibrant world through their sales of adult products, embracing the belief that “We women also care about a passionate sex life and should enjoy it.” The lead roles are portrayed by Kim So-yeon, Kim Sun-young, Kim Sung-ryung, Lee Se-hee, and Yeon Woo-jin.

Kim So-yeon takes on the role of Han Jeong-suk, a housewife who was the first runner-up in a local beauty contest and married her first love. Her life is characterized by modesty and financial struggles. Han Jeong-suk begins selling imported adult products and quickly realizes her knack for marketing and sales.

Kim Sun-young plays Seo Young-bok. Despite her fulfilling family life and strong relationship with her husband, she faces hardships due to cramped living conditions with her six-member family. Motivated to provide her children with separate rooms, she decides to sell adult products.

Kim Sung-ryung embodies Oh Geum-hee, a university graduate married to Choi Won-bong (played by Kim Won-hae) through an arranged marriage. Feeling trapped in a monotonous existence where her husband demands she stay home, she joins Han Jeong-suk in selling imported adult products, leading her to a path of unexpected self-discovery.

Lee Se-hee portrays Lee Ju Ri, the town’s “it girl” and a single mother managing her own hair salon. Unfazed by the judgmental stares she receives for her provocative outfits, she takes on the role of an adult product seller for fun, later undergoing substantial personal growth through her experiences.
