The premiere of tvN’s “Jeongnyeon: The Star Is Born,”which aired on October 7th, showcased the impressive talents of Kim Tae-ri, Jung Eun-chae, and Shin Ye-eun.
In her portrayal of Yoon Jeong-nyeon, Kim Tae-ri described her character as a fish seller from Mokpo’s local market, who, driven by her aspirations as a singer, ventures to Seoul and joins the National Changgeuk Company of Korea to pursue financial success.
“Jeong-nyeon embodies honesty and straightforwardness. If she wants to confront someone, she does it without hesitation,” Kim remarked. “Her presence often leads to various incidents, attracting people around her. I’ve learned that the original webtoon’s creator modeled her character partly on my role as Sook-hee in ‘The Handmaiden,’ which likely enhanced my connection to the webtoon. The parallels felt significant.”
Shin Ye-eun praised Jung Eun-chae’s character, Moon Ok-kyung, saying, “Viewers of ‘Jeongnyeon: The Star Is Born’ will be captivated by Moon Ok-kyung, as she truly embodies the essence of a prince.”
Producer Jeong Ji-in shared his initial impression of Eun-chae, saying, “I’ve always found Eun-chae to be exceptionally beautiful, but she was somewhat taken aback when I presented the role to her. It was a departure from any character she had played before. Initially, she imagined herself as Hye-rang. However, when she donned her outfit and gradually cut her hair, it was incredibly striking, and we affectionately referred to her as our prince.”
“During the script reading, Jung Eun-chae showed up with a short hairstyle and a shirt, and we all agreed, ‘That’s it. We have our prince,’” recalled co-star Ra Mi-ran.
Reflecting on her experience, Jung Eun-chae admitted, “At first, I wanted to escape. I was overwhelmed and embarrassed by the circumstances, but it ultimately enriched my performance. Being called a prince gave me a certain responsibility in my portrayal. For over six months, I wore men’s clothing throughout the preparation, even outside of filming.”
Shin Ye-eun elaborated on her character, Heo Young-seo, stating, “I perceive Young-seo as a perfectionist who strives for flawlessness. She seeks respect and does not wish to reveal her weaknesses to others.”
Expressing a personal connection to her role, Shin Ye-eun said, “I may not be perfect, but like Young-seo, I often chase after perfection. I resonate with her persistence and passion, even when facing challenges.”
