After dedicating three years to mastering Pansori, Kim Tae-ri’s commitment shines through in the burgeoning popularity of “Jeong Nyeon,” a weekend series on tvN. The original webtoon creators, writers Seo Ireh and Namon, expressed their excitement over the drama’s increasing viewership.
Set against the backdrop of the 1950s, following the Korean War, “Jeong Nyeon” tells the tale of Yoon Jeong-nyeon, a prodigious young talent striving to become a leading actress in gukgeuk, a traditional form of Korean opera. The series stands out due to its emphasis on female-led gukgeuk stories, compelling performances, and exceptional direction, garnering widespread acclaim since its premiere.
The standout cast featuring Kim Tae-ri as Yoon Jeong-nyeon, along with Shin Ye-eun as Heo Yeong-seo, Ra Mi-ran as Kang So-bok, Jung Eun-chae as Moon Ok-kyung, and Kim Yoon-hye as Seo Hye-rang, has been commended for their remarkable performances. The vivid depiction of the 1950s, the exquisite staging of the gukgeuk performances, and the enchanting traditional music have collectively crafted a rich visual and auditory narrative.
In its second episode, “Jeong Nyeon” achieved a remarkable metropolitan household rating of 8.9%, peaking at 10.0%, while the national average reached 8.2%, with a top of 9.5%—as reported by Nielsen Korea based on subscription platforms. These impressive figures nearly doubled the ratings from the debut episode, highlighting the show’s rapid ascent into double-digit viewership within just two episodes.
Additionally, “Jeong Nyeon” took the top spot in TV-OTT drama conversation, according to Good Data Corporation metrics for the second week of October.
Seo Ireh, the webtoon writer, noted, “Experiencing ‘Jeong Nyeon’ come to life was incredibly moving. The harmony between the actors and their webtoon counterparts was remarkable, but the standout moments were in the sound and performance. The gukgeuk scene in the first episode felt authentic, almost like witnessing a real performance. Kim Tae-ri’s vocals were exceptional, and I was also impressed by Shin Ye-eun’s transformation into her lively character in the second episode.”
Namon, the illustrator, shared, “The acting was awe-inspiring, and the unique chemistry amongst the cast brought me both laughter and tears. I warmly invite everyone to immerse themselves in the enchanting world of female gukgeuk. Let’s celebrate it together.”
Namon also presented fan art of Jeong Nyeon, underscoring her fondness for the series.
Looking ahead, Episode 3 of “Jeong Nyeon” is set to air on October 19 at 9:20 p.m (KST).
