Despite his unwavering determination to find his daughter Song Hye-hee, who disappeared 25 years ago, Song Gil-yong passed away at the age of 71 in a tragic traffic accident without ever having the chance to reunite with her. He had once declared that he would do anything to locate her, but unfortunately, his wish was not fulfilled in his lifetime.
Song’s 17-year-old daughter, Song Hye-hee, went missing in 1999 after getting off a bus near her home in Pyeongtaek, Gyeonggi Province. The bus driver, who was said to be the last person to see her, stated that he recalled an unidentified man who appeared to have been drinking, exiting the bus with her on that day.
Despite the desperation in his search for his daughter, Song sacrificed his means of living and displayed banners across the nation with the plea, “Assist in locating the absent Song Hye-hee.”
The banners he displayed were visible not just in locations such as Jongno and Myeong-dong in Seoul, but also at highway rest stops, on university campuses in the city, and at bustling intersections in rural areas.
During his search for his daughter, Song not only made appearances on broadcasts but also traveled across the country in a truck adorned with his daughter’s photo. In an interview with a media outlet, he mentioned that he had already driven his newly purchased car for 200,000 km, having scrapped his previous car in the process.
After their daughter went missing, Song’s wife fell into a deep depression and sadly passed away five years later. It is heartbreaking to know that she left this world still clutching a flyer with their daughter’s face on it, adding to the already devastating tragedy.
Despite the introduction of the policy to integrate mobile phone numbers into the 010 prefix, Song was adamant about keeping his 016 number. He held onto the hope that his missing daughter might call him on that number.
Despite his best efforts, Song ultimately passed away before being able to reunite with his daughter. As his passing was mourned by many, actor Kim Woo-bin also sent his condolences.
The JoongAng Ilbo reported that on August 28, there was a constant flow of people who came to pay their respects at Song’s funeral. Flowers were placed at the funeral from various organizations, including the Youth Protection Division of the National Police Agency, the Child Rights Protection Agency, and actor Kim Woo-bin.
According to reports, Kim Woo-bin’s agency was initially unaware of the situation. However, they clarified to JoongAng Ilbo that they had previously come across the banner ‘Looking for Song Hye-hee’ and upon learning about his passing, they sent flowers as a gesture of condolences.
