Kim Woo-bin’s Inspiring Journey: Overcoming Cancer After Being Given Just 6 Months to Live

Actor Kim Woo-bin recently opened up about his inspiring journey of conquering nasopharyngeal cancer, maintaining a positive mindset throughout. He revealed that despite being told he had only “6 months to live,”he never lost faith in his ability to recover.

Alongside his co-star Kim Sung-kyun, the duo appeared as guests on the popular Netflix original film Officer Black Belt during the show Salty Brother, hosted by Shin Dong-yup on the 16th.

Salty Brother is a unique web variety show centered around a drinking-room theme, where Kim Woo-bin, who has been fighting nasopharyngeal cancer since 2017, showcased his thoughtfulness by bringing his own non-alcoholic beer.

Shin Dong-yup, known for his close friendship with Kim Woo-bin, shared a light-hearted memory, stating, “Kim Woo-bin was never a heavy drinker and was always the first to get tipsy. It was amusing to see him get drunk and say, ‘Hyung, I’m drunk.’” This anecdote highlighted a softer side of the talented actor.

In return, Kim Woo-bin expressed his gratitude towards Shin, stating, “Just knowing someone as well-known as Shin Dong-yup gave me a significant boost and made me feel accomplished in my career. When he casually suggested we grab a meal, saying, ‘Woo-bin, let’s eat,’ it truly meant a lot to me.”

Kim Woo-bin also shared a glimpse into his self-care regimen. Despite a hectic schedule, he remains committed to fitness through regular workouts and visits to the sauna. When Shin joked that his impressive physique might intimidate others in the sauna, Kim humbly replied, “It’s just the thick clothing.”

Kim Sung-kyun chimed in, “Kim Woo-bin’s physique is really remarkable. He always eats liquid chicken breast, which I can’t manage to do myself.”

Kim Woo-bin admitted that while his body isn’t as out of shape as he initially feared, for his role in Officer Black Belt, he desired a character with a more relatable physique instead of a highly defined, low-body-fat form.

“I believed it would be better to have a bit of body fat, so I happily increased my intake and gained about 8 kilograms,” the actor commented.

In his reflections on battling cancer, Kim Woo-bin stated, “I’m inherently a positive individual and always strive to find strength in every circumstance. Hearing that I had ‘as short as six months’ to live was a shocking and daunting revelation; I wished it were just a nightmare. Nevertheless, I never thought, ‘What if I can’t conquer this?’”

He continued, “I viewed it as an opportunity. After more than a decade of relentless work since my debut, I considered it a chance to reflect and spend meaningful time with my family. That’s why I strengthened connections with my loved ones,” emphasizing his resolute positive outlook.
