If you’ve been curious about what Planet of the Apes would be like without the apes, your wish is about to come true with a special feature on the film’s home video release.
According to an exclusive report by People, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes will soon be available for home viewing. The 4K Ultra HD, Blu-Ray, and DVD versions will be released on August 27, with a digital release on July 9.
However, the 4K Ultra HD version will offer a distinct and immersive viewing experience by showcasing a version without the use of digital ape effects. Instead, viewers will have the opportunity to witness the actors’ performances through motion capture technology.
Titled Inside the Lens: The Raw Cut, this feature will enable audiences to simultaneously view the original version of the movie alongside a new cut that highlights the ape actors’ performances by showcasing them without any visual effects.
For those who are not familiar with the film industry, the idea of watching an incomplete movie with less visual effects may seem unappealing. However, for devoted fans of the modern Planet of the Apes franchise, the performances in these films are a major draw.
The Planet of the Apes reboot series heavily promoted the use of well-known actors for the ape characters, with particular emphasis on Andy Serkis, known for his performance in the Lord of the Rings franchise, as Caesar. The subsequent films also featured renowned actors such as Toby Kebbell, Judy Greer, and Steve Zahn to further develop the ape world.
Similar to the previous films in the franchise, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes heavily relies on the performances of mocap actors. This includes Owen Teague, Kevin Durand, and Peter Macon, among others.
Despite being beloved by audiences, it is strange that the franchise has never been awarded an Oscar for its special effects. The upcoming release of the new cut will provide an exciting opportunity to not only witness the behind-the-scenes process of the film’s creation, but also to appreciate the dedication and talent of the actors in their performances.
