Konosuba season 3 episode 5 review: Kazuma enlisted by Eris in a treasure hunt as the Devil King’s army is defeated

The fifth episode of Konosuba season 3 was officially released on Wednesday, May 8, 2024, continuing the thrilling storyline of the third season. Fans eagerly awaited the action-packed episode, which would feature Kazuma and his companions in a fierce battle against the invading army of the Devil King.

Despite expectations for Konosuba season 3 episode 5 to continue the main plot, it instead focused on laying the groundwork for future storylines. Kazuma’s reunion with goddess Eris and invitation to participate in the hunt for the Divine Treasures served as the catalyst for these developments.

Konosuba season 3 episode 5: Kazuma’s Divine Treasure Hunt with Eris

Summary of Episode

The fifth episode of Konosuba’s third season picked up right where the previous one left off, with the focus now on the massive horde of monsters surrounding the royal capital. Kazuma Sato and his companions joined the battle, with Claire’s endorsement allowing him to participate despite his low level. Onlookers began discussing Kazuma’s past accomplishments, leading to a cheer in his honor. He then caught the attention of Iris and Rain, who were watching from above, and told them to keep an eye on him.

Aqua approached Kazuma, expressing her foreboding feeling that this would not end well. She referenced the antics of Megumin and Darkness to support her statement. Kazuma responded with an inspiring speech, but it was quickly revealed that he had died and returned to Eris once more. Their encounter was once again uncomfortable, with Eris clearly judging Kazuma for his repeated appearances before her.

In the fifth episode of Konosuba season 3, Kazuma recounts the events leading up to their battle, prompting a flashback to show the progression of the battle. Kazuma had been pursuing a weak monster known as a Kobold, but was deceived and ended up being surrounded by an entire pack of them. Upon returning to the present, Eris is visibly annoyed by the situation. She then goes on to mock Kazuma’s actions with Chris, specifically mentioning his inappropriate behavior towards her.

Concerned, Kazuma inquired about how closely Eris had been observing him, causing her to chuckle before revealing that she needed his assistance with a task that would bring him no recognition or compensation. She stressed that she could only ask someone she trusted and requested Kazuma’s help in gathering the Divine Treasures.

After being revived in episode 5 of season 3 of Konosuba, Kazuma was greeted by Aqua and quickly learned that the battle had ended. As he thought about his next actions, he had a flashback where Eris explained the Divine Treasures – weapons with special abilities. One could summon a random monster, while the other allowed the user to switch bodies with someone else for a limited time. To his amusement, everyone in his group, except for himself, was being praised as the MVP of the battle.

Despite her initial attempt to impress the soldiers, Megumin’s plan ultimately failed as they also requested to see her Advanced Magic, which she lacked. Along with Kazuma, she went back to the castle and immediately requested to return home the following morning. However, they were met by Princess Iris, who kindly offered Kazuma to stay in his former room for the night and recuperate after their recent ordeal.

In episode 5 of season 3 of Konosuba, Kazuma came to terms with the fact that it was time for him to return home. Megumin expressed her preference for their life in Axel together over their time in the royal capital. Kazuma, feeling slightly embarrassed, agreed with her sentiment. However, their conversation was interrupted by Iris, who informed Kazuma that Claire had rejected his proposal to stay in the castle. As a result, Kazuma apologized to her for not being able to be of more assistance in the battle.

Megumin observed the magical energy emanating from Iris’ necklace, a gift from her brother Jatice. Curious, she inquired about its purpose, but Iris admitted that even she was unsure how to use it. To prove her point, she showed them the inscription, written in Japanese. Kazuma initially dismissed it as a joke, but as soon as he read the words, the necklace began to glow. It turned out to be the Divine Treasure that could switch the souls of two individuals, and it did just that with Kazuma and Iris.

In episode 5 of Konosuba season 3, Kazuma recalls Eris mentioning a Divine Treasure and shares his knowledge of it with Iris and Megumin. However, Iris expresses disappointment as she had been looking forward to leaving the castle without guards or retainers. Megumin kindly offers to accompany her and ensure she has a good time.

Despite Megumin’s excitement about their future adventures, Kazuma began to have doubts about their plan. As Princess Iris, Kazuma was content with his life, but Claire grew suspicious of his true identity. When Mitsurugi approached “Iris”and touched her head, Kazuma immediately asked for his execution before eventually agreeing to Claire’s plea. Later, “Iris”discovered that Darkness was taking a bath and insisted on joining her, with Claire chiming in as well.

As the thought crossed Claire’s mind, she became feverish and they made their way to the bath to find Darkness already dressed. After some persuasion, Darkness agreed to join them in the bath once again. While Kazuma hesitated for a moment, he ultimately decided to go through with it. The episode concluded with a short scene of Iris (in Kazuma’s body) and Megumin confronting some street thugs.

In review

Despite not meeting fans’ expectations in terms of action, Konosuba’s season 3 episode 5 successfully introduced the main plot for the season as anticipated. This was achieved in an effective manner that solidifies Kazuma’s belief in Eris as a goddess and progresses their relationship as she asks him to search for the Divine Treasures.

The fifth episode also successfully continues to develop Kazuma and Megumin’s relationship, with both characters expressing their true feelings for each other (though not directly). They also work together as a team, making it a heartwarming moment. The implicit nature only adds to the anticipation of a potential mutual confession of love between Kazuma and Megumin in the future.
