The results showcased two prominent K-pop groups.

Also known as the “NHK Red And White Song Battle,” the “NHK Kōhaku Uta Gassen” is a celebrated annual television spectacle in Japan where top performers are split into two competing teams. Over the past few years, the inclusion of K-pop artists in this event has highlighted the genre’s growing appeal within Japan.

In 2023, several significant K-pop groups made their performances, including SEVENTEEN, Stray Kids, NewJeans, and LE SSERAFIM. Also featured were acts like MiSaMo from TWICE and NiziU, consisting of Japanese members under K-pop management.

The survey reflected the performers from 2023, identifying two K-pop artists within the top five rankings among their respective teams.

NiziU, who has participated in the event for the fourth time, secured the 4th position on the red team. A viewer shared their discontent, stating, “They’re no longer in the spotlight. I lost interest in them a long time ago.” Conversely, another voter classified them as a Korean group, questioning their relevance in this prominent Japanese event.

Stray Kids achieved the same 4th place rank, but on the white team. Unlike NiziU, who has a history of appearances, Stray Kids made their first appearance on the show just last year. Some viewer comments included, “I’ve never even heard of them or listened to their music. What are they doing here?” and “This show carries historical importance in Japan; it should primarily feature Japanese performers.”

It will be fascinating to discover which K-pop groups, if any, will be invited to join the 75th edition of this event this year.
