On the 16th, INB100, the agency representing Baekhyun, publicly addressed the indoor smoking incident involving their artist, stating, “We sincerely apologize to everyone who felt uncomfortable due to the smoking incident circulating on the internet.”
Baekhyun’s agency clarified, “At that moment, neither Baekhyun nor the staff were aware that the import of electronic cigarettes is prohibited in Macau. While dining with the staff after his performance in Macau, Baekhyun inadvertently used an electronic cigarette as the conversation became more engaging.”
The agency further stated, “Baekhyun sincerely regrets and apologizes for disappointing many fans with his thoughtless action. Both Baekhyun and the agency will commit to extra precautions to ensure that such incidents do not occur again, and we promise to uphold our fans’ expectations moving forward.”
Previously, numerous online communities shared photos and videos depicting Baekhyun smoking indoors at a restaurant.
Following the release of the apology, netizens continued to express their criticism, asking, “It was a restaurant, right? So everyone was eating there, weren’t they?” “Unconsciously? Is it that hard to hold back for a moment?” and “Regardless of being overseas, disruptive behavior is unacceptable.”
The topic of idols smoking indoors has repeatedly sparked discussions. Last July, BLACKPINK member Jennie faced backlash after being photographed smoking while getting her makeup done, which led to discussions regarding indoor smoking and potential misuse of authority.
In response to the controversy, Jennie’s independent agency, Odd Atelier (OA), stated, “Jennie acknowledges her mistake of smoking indoors and the inconvenience it caused to the staff. She personally contacted those present to apologize. We apologize to the disappointed fans and promise to showcase a more responsible side of Jennie in the future.”
Footage showing D.O. smoking inside was recorded during EXO’s behind-the-scenes visit to a music show waiting area.
A netizen lodged a complaint about D.O.’s indoor smoking at the Sangam MBC building, and the Mapo District Health Center responded, “The individual and the agency claimed that they used a nicotine-free electronic cigarette. However, as the product’s ingredients and instruction manual could not definitively prove it was nicotine-free, a fine was issued. The individual has also vowed to follow the law more diligently as a public figure in the future.”
Amid the ongoing discussions surrounding idols smoking indoors, netizens shared a range of opinions: “Are they smoking indoors out of habit to avoid being seen by fans?” “Smoking in a non-smoking area when others are present is a significant issue,” “Is the industry fostering this behavior?” and “If it’s a recurring controversy, they must take action to stop it.”
