Lady Gaga Discusses Trans Rumors in New Netflix Series

Lady Gaga has shared the emotional reasoning behind why she chose not to deny the rumors regarding her being a transgender woman during her early career.

In a recent appearance on the second episode of Netflix’s ‘What’s Next? The Future With Bill Gates,’ Lady Gaga tackled the widely discussed 2011 rumors that suggested she was transgender.

Reflecting on her early career, the ‘Born This Way’ artist stated: “I traveled all over the world for tours and promotions, and in nearly every interview, there were claims… there was this manipulated imagery on the internet…

“They would ask, ‘There are rumors that you’re a man. What do you have to say about that?’ The reason I didn’t respond to those questions is that I didn’t feel like a victim of that falsehood, and I thought: ‘What about a child who is facing those accusations and would think that a public figure like me would feel shame?’”

She elaborated: “There have been moments when correcting a rumor was not in the best interest of others’ well-being. In those situations, I aimed to provoke thought and disrupt in other ways. I attempted to utilize the misinformation to foster another disruptive dialogue.”

In 2011, Anderson Cooper questioned Gaga during a CNN interview if she had “a male appendage.” The singer responded at that time: “Why would I waste my time issuing a press release about whether or not I have a penis? My fans don’t care, and neither do I.”

The ‘Joker: Folie à Deux’ actress has been a longstanding advocate for the LGBTQ+ community, particularly championing trans rights. Earlier this year, she met with transgender media personality Dylan Mulvaney and voiced her opposition to the abuse directed at her.

Gaga articulated her profound sense of protectiveness for the transgender community, emphasizing that they continue to lead with “their endless grace and inspiration amid ongoing degradation, intolerance, and various forms of violence.”
