Lady Gaga’s recent album announcement has taken many by surprise, and now the star of Joker: Folie à Deux has shared the inspiration behind her latest creative project.
Throughout her career, Lady Gaga has seamlessly transitioned into acting, building a remarkable on-screen legacy. Her performances showcase that whether in music or film, Gaga’s abilities often manifest through method performance.
It’s no wonder that she revealed her upcoming album, Harlequin, was directly influenced by her role in the anticipated movie and stemmed from her difficulty in letting go of her character in Joker: Folie à Deux.
“This idea of dual identities has always been integral to my music,” she stated [via The Zane Lowe Show]. “I have consistently created characters in my music, and portraying Lee in Joker left a profound impact on me.”
Gaga elaborated that the film was rich with music she adored, and through the story, along with live music, dance, costumes, and makeup, she further explored her character.
After finishing the musical, Gaga admitted she was unable to completely detach from Harley, leading to the creation of Harlequin, a 13-track album featuring covers of beloved classics from Joker 2.
“I had a deeply immersive experience with the character, and she lingered in my creativity, which inspired me to craft an entire album in her honor,” she explained.
“She’s an incredibly complex woman, and as a female artist and producer, I found it incredibly liberating to determine that this album will embody whatever I wish it to be—be it blues, funk, or soul.”
