A decade and a half after the release of Zack Snyder’s polarizing film, a fresh Watchmen movie has achieved a flawless 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes… however, there are a few things you should be aware of.
In 2009, I discussed the critical reception of Watchmen. Eleven years later in 2020, I am still discussing the critical reception of Watchmen. And in 2024, I will continue to talk about the critical reception of Watchmen.
Despite author Alan Moore’s disapproval, Warner Bros continues to adapt his influential comic book series. However, the latest version of the series, directed by Brandon Vietti of Young Justice, has received widespread acclaim.
Despite receiving a perfect 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, Watchmen: Chapter 1 has also garnered widespread acclaim from both critics and fans, being hailed as the “best adaptation to date.”
IGN praised Watchmen: Chapter 1 for its stunning animation and faithful script, noting that it was clearly a labor of love. However, while it successfully avoided some of the pitfalls of previous adaptations, it also exposed a few of its own, according to the review.
“According to Comic Book Resources, while Watchmen: Chapter 1 may not be a flawless interpretation of the iconic comic that revolutionized superhero narratives in the late 20th century, it is the most faithful version that fans could hope for.”
The only issue is that it’s an animated film and the release date for Chapter 2 is uncertain.
If you are not familiar with the plot, the story is set in a different timeline where renowned superheroes either serve the government or operate as banned vigilantes.
When The Comedian is killed, Rorschach summons his former colleagues in crime-fighting to discover the reason for his death… and they soon uncover a larger, more terrifying enigma than they could have ever anticipated.
There are no spoilers included, but it is widely known that Watchmen is a lengthy and complex book, which is why it has been divided into two parts. The first chapter has a duration of only 83 minutes, meaning that the complete film will likely be around three hours long, similar to Snyder’s director’s cut, which is the preferred version to watch.
