LE SSERAFIM Secures Victory Over Cyberwreckers: Information Disclosure Request Granted by U.S. Court

LE SSERAFIM Secures Victory Over Cyberwreckers: Information Disclosure Request Granted by U.S. Court

It is anticipated that this choice will speed up HYBE’s legal actions against these cyberwreckers.

On August 23rd, news broke that Source Music, the agency representing LE SSERAFIM, had successfully obtained a court order from the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California. The request, which was originally submitted in July, aimed to reveal the identities of those responsible for defamatory content posted on YouTube targeting the group. The victory was quickly shared with LE SSERAFIM’s fans both domestically and internationally through various social media platforms such as X (formerly Twitter), and received widespread support.

On July 30th, Source Music had previously requested that the court reveal the identities of the two YouTube account owners who were responsible for disseminating defamatory material about LE SSERAFIM members.

With the court’s permission, Source Music is anticipated to collect the required data from Google and move forward with legal proceedings in Korea. The judgment made it clear that the court granted the data request with the understanding that it would be utilized for civil litigation, rather than criminal prosecution.

This recent development comes after a previous incident in June where HYBE, the parent company of Source Music, had made a similar request to the same court, but was ultimately denied. In that particular case, Judge Vince Chhabria had stated that requests for information disclosure pertaining to criminal investigations must be made by law enforcement and not the victim. The court also took note of the fact that there was no evidence of the Korean police taking any action based on HYBE’s complaint, resulting in the request being denied.

The court has granted the request this time, as it was presented in the context of a civil lawsuit. Once the identities of the cyberwreckers are confirmed, LE SSERAFIM is expected to move forward with significant civil lawsuits.

In response, HYBE announced that they will comprehensively review future measures and release their official stance.
