The latest Yu-Gi-Oh! booster set released in 2024 includes a selection of thrilling cards that will seamlessly integrate into the overall TCG environment.
The fourth core booster of Series 12, Legacy of Destruction, builds upon the themes and archetypes that were central to Age of Overlord and Phantom Nightmare. With its significant volume of content, this expansion promises to enhance the viability of new decks at a competitive level.
While it may not appear as heavily stacked as Age of Overlord at the moment, there is still a considerable variety of new support available, as well as some impressive versatile options that can be used in multiple decks. Taking all of this into consideration, we have provided a breakdown of the new set and the key cards to keep an eye on.
Legacy of Destruction Archetype Support
Legacy of Destruction features a wide variety of cards that offer support for numerous established archetypes. It also introduces promising new themes such as Ragnaraika, Tenpai Dragon, and Sangen, all of which are built upon solid foundations. Among the support for existing archetypes, there are a few that stand out as particularly notable.
Diabellstar/Sinful Spoils
The Sinful Spoils archetype has not only become a dominant force in the game, but it has also revitalized previously lackluster decks when used in combination. With the addition of Legacy of Destruction, there are now more options available, though it may be challenging to recommend many of the new cards.
The Snake-Eye Diabellstar is expected to be a popular addition to most Snake-Eye decks due to its highly anticipated release in the OCG. While the card boasts impressive stats, its main value lies in its ability to revive cards from the graveyard, enabling players to continue the interactive gameplay that Snake-Eye decks are known for.
Despite its potential for situational use, Diabellze is not expected to gain much popularity, at least for the time being. Additionally, it would be challenging to make a case for adding the new Spells and Traps over the ones already introduced in previous sets.
Yubel
Even though Yubel is highly regarded for her role in the Dimension World arc in Yu-Gi-Oh! GX, the TCG has only utilized her as a theme for individual cards rather than a complete archetype. However, with the introduction of Phantom Nightmare, there has been a shift towards building a more cohesive archetype, and Legacy of Destruction is furthering this progress. Despite this, the archetype still requires additional support to reach a competitive level in duels.
The addition of only one Effect Monster and a Spell is appreciated, especially considering that these cards are of high quality. Gruesome Grave Squirmer provides valuable summoning and card cycling abilities through its active and Banish effects.
The Nightmare Throne Field Spell is an essential addition for all players constructing a Yubel-centric deck. Its effect enables the Special Summoning of a card with a level one higher or lower than a card that has been removed from the field by a card’s effect, making way for Yubel – The Loving Defender Forever.
Ashened
The initial appearance of Ashened in Phantom Nightmare was thrilling, yet it merely signaled the beginning for those aiming to construct a deck focused on the archetype. With the release of Legacy of Destruction, additional crucial support has been introduced, including impactful normal summons and captivating boss monsters.
The Ashened City Shaman and Spearhead are crucial components of players’ rotations. The Shaman’s ability is effective in either drawing out Obsidim or retrieving cards from the field when Obsidim is present. Likewise, Spearhead is a valuable tool for removing strong cards from the field, creating an opportunity for summons to directly attack the enemy life points.
Veidos, the Dragon of Endless Darkness, is a highly formidable Fusion Monster that serves as the top summon for many Ashened decks. Its Fusion Summon requires Phantom Nightmare’s Veidos the Eruption Dragon of Extinction and two Level 9 or lower Pyro monsters, making it a priority for players. Once successfully summoned, it becomes incredibly challenging to remove from the field.
The recently introduced spell, Extinguishing the Ashened, provides players with an easier way to obtain the costly Ashened Fusion cards by utilizing its Banish effect, which enables Fusion Summoning with materials from the hand. Another useful spell card, Rekindling the Ashened, allows players to recycle cards from the Graveyard back into the deck. Additionally, the trap card Ashened to Endlessness can function as a specific version of Super Polymerization when faced with the right opponent.
In summary, these cards make an Ashened deck capable of being competitive by including a few essential cards to hinder the opponent and effectively summon powerful creatures onto the battlefield.
Melodious
Despite the relatively reasonable cost of building a deck within the Melodious archetype, it has been challenging to comprehend why it is currently underutilized. However, with the release of Legacy of Destruction’s offering, it is about to become significantly improved, even for those on a budget.
The inclusion of three commons that are essential to the archetype immediately makes it an attractive choice for players of all levels. Couplet the Melodious Songstress and Refrain the Melodious Songstress are two high-quality Pendulum options that complement each other perfectly when utilized in the same deck, regardless of their differing power levels.
The addition of Melodious Concerto is excellent as it enables players to easily bring powerful Fusion Summons onto the field. Furthermore, when a Fusion is removed, it has the ability to return to the deck from the GY, making it challenging for opponents to completely halt the deck’s progress.
Lightsworn
Lightsworn is adored by the majority of the community and is undeniably one of the greatest beneficiaries of the Legacy of Destruction expansion. This set introduces four new cards tailored for the archetype, each with a solid case for inclusion in any deck utilizing the theme.
Weiss, Lightsworn Archfiend and Lightsworn Dragonling are excellent choices for Normal Summons, as their abilities allow for extensive deck searching, Special Summons, and retrieving cards from the graveyard.
The latest and significant addition to the game is Minerva, the Athenian Lightsworn, a Synchro Monster. Thanks to cards like Weiss and Dragonling, it is relatively effortless to summon her at Level 8. Additionally, her primary abilities complement Lightsworn’s strength in special summoning from the GY.
The last addition to the collection is Trap Card Lightsworn Aegis. While it may not be the most thrilling option, there are several reasons to include it. As omni-negates are becoming increasingly rare, this card can be a valuable tool against many popular decks.
Ancient Gear
Despite its unlikeliness to become a meta-defining archetype, Ancient Gear fans should be thrilled with the new additions in Legacy of Destruction. The introduction of Ancient Gear Dark Golem, a powerful high-level Effect Monster, offers a Pot of Greed-like effect upon its summoning, providing players with more opportunities to bring additional cards into play.
Both Ancient Gear Advance and Ancient Gear Duel have the potential to become essential cards, with the latter providing effective solutions for the archetype’s vulnerabilities and the ability to easily remove cards. Additionally, Ancient Gear Commander and Ancient Gear Tanker are noteworthy Normal Summon options, as their impressive effects make it simpler to summon higher-powered cards.
