Janel Grant, who has accused Vince McMahon of sexual trafficking and assault, is notably absent from Netflix’s Mr. McMahon documentary – and the reasons for her omission have now been clarified.
This six-part docuseries delves into the career of the WWE chief, charting his rise and subsequent fall, from his early collaborations with Hulk Hogan (including the lawsuit from Richard Belzer) to the controversial allegations that led to his resignation in 2022.
Prior to the release on Netflix, McMahon issued a statement branding the series as “misleading,” claiming that the producers utilized “editing tricks with out-of-context footage and dated soundbites to distort the viewers’ perception and support a deceptive narrative.”
The series showcases interviews with McMahon himself, Stephanie McMahon, Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson, John Cena, and other prominent figures in the wrestling industry. However, it’s important to note that these interviews were conducted before the allegations against McMahon came to light, and Grant is not featured.
Ann Callis, the attorney representing Janel Grant, released a statement regarding the documentary, emphasizing that it only “scratches the surface” of McMahon’s alleged misconduct and elaborating on Grant’s absence.
“The Mr. McMahon docuseries makes it evident that there is no distinction between Vince McMahon’s on-screen persona and his true self; they are one in the same,” she asserted.
“His ‘character’ – infamous for violent outbursts, sexual deviance, and manipulation – reflects the real Vince McMahon and perfectly encapsulates what Janel Grant endured behind closed doors at WWE for years.
“While the docuseries highlights McMahon’s fixation on power and control, it only scratches the surface of his criminal behavior and fails to present the complete narrative of his abuse, sexual assault, and human trafficking of Ms. Grant.”
“She deserves the chance to share her story, when she feels ready and in her own manner. We anticipate her day in court and look forward to seeing McMahon finally held accountable for his actions.”
In her lawsuit, Grant has alleged that she was “the victim of physical and emotional abuse, sexual assault, and trafficking at WWE… Ms. Grant is filing this lawsuit not solely to address her own suffering but also to advocate for those who are afraid to come forward.”
