Leigh Whannell Shares Uninspiring News About Upgrade 2

Released in 2018, Upgrade is a noteworthy action film directed by Leigh Whannell, who is renowned for his contributions to both horror and sci-fi genres. Despite the absence of an overwhelming demand for a sequel, Whannell often finds himself imagining Upgrade 2.

Whannell, best known for his writing on the Saw and Insidious franchises and direction of films like The Invisible Man, has ventured into the realm of science fiction with Upgrade. The film features Logan Marshall-Green in a captivating performance as a mechanic who undergoes a life-altering accident, leading to the implantation of a chip that enhances and controls his movements.

Despite a modest $3 million budget, Upgrade achieved a respectable box office return of $17 million and boasts a commendable 88% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Although the film’s ending leaves room for further storytelling, a sequel has yet to materialize.

Whannell’s Perspective on a Potential Sequel

In reflecting on the film’s success, Whannell remarked, “No one is really clamoring for an Upgrade sequel.” Producer Jason Blum previously hinted at a sequel shortly after the film’s release, tweeting about “plans” for a follow-up. Whannell also mentioned that he has envisioned the possibility of either a cinematic sequel with a larger budget or a television adaptation, as teased back in 2020.

During a recent interview, Whannell discussed his creative process and the future of the Upgrade franchise. He stated, “I never say never to sequels. Even with something like Upgrade, I’ll find myself day-dreaming about ‘what would that sequel be?’” However, he acknowledged that for a sequel to come to fruition, studios like Universal or Blumhouse Productions need to support the project, and currently, “no one’s asking for Upgrade 2.”

As fans eagerly await Whannell’s upcoming work, Wolf Man, set to release this Friday, January 17, 2025, there remains a blend of anticipation and hope surrounding the potential for future installments of Upgrade.
