Not too long ago, Chaewon, the head of the all-female band LE SSERAFIM, uploaded a cover video of Ariana Grande’s “We Can’t Be Friends (Wait for Your Love).”
The female idol’s performance of a hit song by the American diva was a huge success, much to the joy of her fans. Chaewon chose to keep the video simple, with her vocals as the center of attention, as a special treat for her fans.

Despite initially appearing as a lighthearted and enjoyable moment between Chaewon and her fans, the cover video uploaded by Chaewon sparked a heated debate. Users on the platform X (formerly known as Twitter) accused Chaewon’s vocals of being altered due to the flawless sound quality and lack of background noise or mistakes during the performance, leading to suspicion among many.
Typically, K-pop idols, like Chaewon, share cover videos with low-budget settings, wearing casual clothes and singing in a relaxed manner. The distinction lies in the fact that while other idols usually opt for live performances, they do not rely on studio techniques for such occasions.
Consequently, Chaewon received criticism for simply “showing off”and not having the courage to perform live, with some even accusing her of “misleading the audience”in a straightforward cover video.
Despite the efforts of LE SSERAFIM fans to defend their idol, the negative comments continued to dominate. Following their performance at Coachella 2024, it appears that LE SSERAFIM has fallen out of favor with the general public. Any discussions surrounding the group’s abilities have sparked controversy in light of their underwhelming Coachella appearance.
However, the public’s frustration towards LE SSERAFIM is reported to originate not only from the group’s lack of abilities, but also from their unprofessional demeanor and lack of advancement.
Despite facing backlash for their poor performance at Coachella, Chaewon further incited criticism by posting a photo of herself making an obscene gesture. Many netizens perceive this as a sign of her arrogance and lack of awareness of her flaws, leading to further disapproval for the female idol. Furthermore, her use of studio techniques in a seemingly simple live singing video only added fuel to the public’s dislike for her.
