While 2023 has delivered several delightful romantic films for enthusiasts, Netflix’s newest release is falling flat for viewers.
This year has been vibrant with passionate love stories, featuring popular titles such as The Idea of You and A Family Affair. Netflix has confidently presented its charm through its recent success, Nobody Wants This, which has rapidly ascended the popularity rankings.
In contrast, the streaming giant’s latest romantic feature, Lonely Planet, is struggling to resonate with its audience. The film currently holds a disappointing 38% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, along with a mere 44% score on the Popcornmeter.
Starring Laura Dern and Liam Hemsworth as characters seeking love, the film follows Dern’s portrayal of a reclusive author attending a writers’ retreat in Morocco. As she battles her creative stagnation, she encounters a young man who captivates her in unexpected ways.
Even though Lonely Planet has claimed the second position on Netflix’s Top Movies list, it has garnered harsh criticism instead of praise.
One user on X expressed their discontent, saying, “The chemistry between Liam Hemsworth and Laura Dern felt forced and awkward. Lonely Planet ranks among the most trivial romantic dramas Netflix has churned out, boasting an epiphany that’s incredibly shallow.”
Another viewer lamented, “Lonely Planet was a total letdown; I didn’t connect with any moment in the film. Such a waste of talent; both lead actors are undeniably attractive, yet I wonder why they chose to participate in this.”
One commenter even quipped, “It will be incredibly challenging to find a film this year that exceeds Lonely Planet in terms of showcasing Laura Dern and Liam Hemsworth’s lack of chemistry as a stunning failure.”
If you’re keen to form your own opinion, Lonely Planet is now available for streaming on Netflix.
