In a 2022 episode of the podcast “Impulsive with Logan Paul,” Liam Payne opened up about his experiences in One Direction, delving into the group’s dynamics and controversies, including the notable fallout involving Zayn Malik and Gigi Hadid. The singer drew attention for his pointed remarks about Justin Bieber and for ridiculing several other musicians, one of whom was a popular K-pop boy band.
During the podcast, Logan Paul praised Liam for being a part of One Direction, declaring it “probably the biggest boy band of all time”which hasn’t been duplicated, except when mentioning K-pop groups. In response, Liam noted, “I believe some K-pop bands have definitely rejuvenated the scene. Of course, there’s also 5 Seconds Of Summer, who have achieved significant success as well.”
Even though neither of them specifically named BTS, their choice of words didn’t sit well with BTS’s devoted fanbase, known as ARMYs. They quickly pointed out that BTS’s current popularity eclipses that of One Direction, asserting that it’s not solely about “the K-pop thing.” Fans highlighted BTS’s numerous accolades, expressing their frustration at what they perceived as a dismissal of the group’s impact.
Furthermore, this particular episode of “Impulsive with Logan Paul” coincided with BTS’s address about Asian discrimination at the White House, which led many to feel that Liam and Logan’s remarks could be interpreted as insensitive. As a result, their comments have drawn significant backlash from K-pop fans, especially the ARMYs.
