<p>Before making its debut on Netflix, The Manhattan Alien Abduction was already surrounded by controversy. The spotlight is now on the streaming platform as Linda Napolitano, the central figure of the documentary, has initiated legal action against them.
For those who may not be familiar, this intriguing documentary series delves into the experiences of Linda, who in the 1990s used the alias Linda Cortile. She asserts that she was abducted by extraterrestrials right within her Manhattan home.
With support from UFO expert Budd Hopkins and his wife at the time, Carol Rainey, more than twenty witnesses emerged, claiming they had seen Linda levitating above her apartment during the early morning hours of November 30, 1989.
However, the narrative didn’t end there. As Budd’s conviction in Linda’s account intensified, the details began shifting toward what could easily be mistaken for a science fiction narrative.
Carol and Budd were married, but she started questioning her husband’s methods
Linda claimed she received an alien-inspired cosmetic surgery, purported that intelligence operatives were pursuing her, and even involved her son in her belief of being visited by otherworldly entities.
Carol’s doubt grew as she scrutinized both Linda’s narrative and her husband’s investigative practices. Upon further inspection, she uncovered inconsistencies, including governmental letters that bore a striking resemblance to Linda’s handwriting.
To this day, there has been no conclusive proof to label the entire incident a fabrication. Nevertheless, 77-year-old Linda continues to defend her narrative, featuring prominently in The Manhattan Alien Abduction to rebut the doubters.
Despite seizing the opportunity to present her perspective, Linda has recently expressed grievances regarding the representation of her story—ultimately leading her to take legal action against Netflix.
On Monday, October 28, just two days before the series premiered, Linda filed a lawsuit aimed at halting Netflix from airing the documentary.
In the court documents reviewed by the Independent, Linda criticized The Manhattan Alien Abduction for framing her story as one of skepticism, portraying her as someone who deceived Budd Hopkins.
The Independent reached out to Linda for further commentary, to which she responded that she was eager to elaborate but was advised by her attorney not to say more.
Her attorney, Robert Young, stated that Linda feels “egregiously deceived” and maintained that if she had understood the documentary’s direction, she would have refrained from participating.
“So, we’ll see,” Young added. “Litigation is a prolonged battle, and I am confident we will ultimately succeed.”
According to a Forbes report on the case, Linda criticized the show for casting her as “the villain” to fuel controversy while depicting Carol as a knowledgeable “skeptic.”
Furthermore, Linda described Carol as an “embittered, alcoholic ex-wife entirely focused on avenging her husband.”
As of now, Netflix has not publicly responded to the allegations, and it remains uncertain if the lawsuit will proceed.
