Understanding Product Disposal at Linus Tech Tips
During the interview aired on January 15, Linus tackled several assumptions held by fans, including the claim that every reviewed product is simply discarded. He remarked, “Some people might assume that, but that would be a really silly thing to do.” Instead, he clarified that while some products are indeed discarded when required, this is not a common practice.
Linus elaborated on specific situations where disposal is mandatory, such as when companies send out engineering samples that are not authorized for public distribution. In such cases, agreements often stipulate that these items must be shredded or returned for destruction. He provided insight into the development process, noting that companies frequently test countless prototypes, which are often destroyed before a final product is introduced to the market.
To illustrate his point, Linus shared an example involving the tech giant OnePlus. While visiting their manufacturing facility, he learned that over 100 prototypes are subjected to rigorous stress testing, sometimes even “beaten to sh*t”for hours. “They will destroy hundreds and hundreds of phones before they ever ship one to a customer,” he said, highlighting the industry practice of testing and eliminating flawed designs.
Despite the realities of tech disposal, Linus emphasized his commitment to minimizing waste. Products that he is permitted to retain are stored in a warehouse, intended for future giveaways to team members or other charitable events.
This revelation follows Linus’s recent appearance on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, where he surprised the audience and the host alike with demonstrations of the latest technology trends and releases.
