At the CES 2025 event, Sony unveiled exciting news: two of its most renowned games under the PlayStation Studios banner, Helldivers and Horizon, are set to be transformed into live-action films.
The landscape of video game adaptations has notably shifted recently. While earlier attempts often struggled to capture the essence of their source material, the tide is turning. Recent releases like The Super Mario Bros. Movie and Mortal Kombat have performed well, alongside critically celebrated series such as The Last of Us on HBO, indicating a promising future for this genre.
Building on this momentum, Sony is intensifying its focus on cross-media storytelling, making a bold move by greenlighting film adaptations of these blockbuster games.
From Game to Screen: The Helldivers Movie
During his presentation at CES 2025, Asad Qizilbash, the head of PlayStation Productions, confirmed that a film based on the widely popular Helldivers has been approved for production.
Riding high on the success of Helldivers 2, which emerged as one of the most significant hits in multiplayer gaming in 2024, this adaptation is seen as a logical step. With its unique premise focused on intergalactic freedom-fighting, the Helldivers film is poised to capture audiences’ imaginations as it heads to theaters.
Details regarding the film’s director, screenwriters, and cast are yet to be announced, indicating that development is in the early stages. Interestingly, Helldivers draws creative inspiration from the cult classic Starship Troopers, a film beloved by sci-fi fans.
A Shift in Plans: Horizon Goes to Film
In a notable development, Qizilbash also disclosed changes concerning the adaptation of the acclaimed Horizon franchise. Initially intended for a Netflix series, the project has instead transitioned to a feature film format.
Discussions surrounding the Netflix adaptation, rumored to be titled Horizon 2074, stalled amid controversies involving showrunner Steve Blackman, ultimately leading to the cancellation of those plans in July 2024.

Now it’s officially confirmed that Sony will pursue a feature-length adaptation of Aloy’s epic journey, although specifics concerning casting and plot development remain forthcoming.
As both film projects are in their infancy, audiences can expect to wait several years for their release, as Sony finalizes its creative teams.
