Logia Awakenings in One Piece: Why Kizaru May Not Be the One to Introduce Them

Recently, there has been a strong emphasis on Devil Fruit Awakenings in One Piece, with numerous characters like Luffy, Lucci, and the Five Elders displaying their Awakened forms. However, the Mythical Zoan-type Fruits have garnered the most interest from fans. Meanwhile, the Logia-type Devil Fruits appear to have taken a secondary role, despite the existence of formidable Logia users like Blackbeard and Akainu.

Previously, Logia-types were considered to be the most formidable and uncommon types of Devil Fruits, providing their users with the power to change their physical form into a specific natural element and control it in vast quantities. Despite his intelligence, even Dr Vegapunk was unable to artificially replicate these fruits.

Despite the lack of official confirmation, there is a fan theory that has surfaced discussing the potential for Logia Fruits to Awaken in One Piece. This theory not only explores the possibility of an Awakening, but also speculates on which character may be the first to demonstrate it.

The fan theory shared by user @ViscaParsa on X suggests that Smoker, who possesses the Moku Moku no Mi Devil Fruit, may be the initial character to attain an Awakening of a Logia Fruit in the world of One Piece.

Despite being a prominent figure in the earlier arcs, Smoker has faded into the background in more recent storylines following his humiliating losses to Donquixote Doflamingo and Vergo. As the story has progressed, other Marines like Koby and Fujitora have emerged as potential heroes, leaving Smoker seeming less significant in comparison. Furthermore, these high-ranking Marines have only continued to grow stronger, making Smoker’s role even more insignificant.

On the contrary, certain Marines, such as Kizaru and Kuzan, have been capturing the audience’s attention with their internal struggles. Additionally, with Akainu being predicted as one of the main antagonists in the Final Saga, showcasing unparalleled strength, it seemed unlikely for Smoker to reclaim the spotlight.

Despite the spoilers, it has been revealed that Smoker will make a brief appearance in One Piece chapter 1117, riding his Billower Bike somewhere in the New World. This suggests that Smoker may have a larger role to play in the story after all.

Smoker did not accompany his subordinate Tashigi on her mission to save Koby in Hachinosu. According to a fan theory, this may be because he was focused on other matters, such as his training, in hopes of unlocking the full potential of his Logia-type Devil Fruit.

According to the fan theorist, there are several significant reasons why Smoker was the first to demonstrate a Logia Awakening, rather than an Admiral like Kizaru. The most notable reason being that Smoker’s appearance in chapter 97 coincided with Oda’s introduction of Logia Fruits in One Piece. As the first Logia user introduced by Oda, it would be appropriate for Smoker to unveil the next level of Logia abilities, as Oda often incorporates parallels in his writing.

Furthermore, Smoker’s unwavering ambition and resolute determination to face off against formidable adversaries have always been defining traits of his character. This mindset portrays him as a tenacious individual who constantly strives to close the gap between himself and his powerful opponents.

Speculations suggest that Smoker may unlock his Logia Awakening in an upcoming arc, possibly during the Straw Hats’ visit to Elbaf. This is expected to happen if Smoker does indeed possess this ability.
