The creators of Smolder in League of Legends have recently unveiled a new design that alters his Q ability depending on the elemental dragon, but the player response has been overwhelmingly positive, with many even dubbing it as “peak”performance.
A previously discarded concept for ADC champion Smolder has been unveiled by designer Riot August. This design involved Smolder’s Q ability being altered depending on the elemental dragon that spawned in the game, adding a dynamic element to the champion’s strength.
In contrast to dealing damage like his current form, the Infernal version would instead explode in an area, the Ocean version would slow enemies, and the Chemtech version would poison enemies, causing damage over time. Additionally, there was a version that allowed him to Q towers, making it possible for him to quickly take objectives.
Despite lacking resources and being considered too reliant on RNG, this design was not completely abandoned. In fact, players still praise its excellence and consider it a “peak”design.
Riot August shared a scrapped version of Smolder where he’d be the son of which ever dragon rift for the game and gain a unique bonus on his Q per rift. This was scrapped due to requiring a lot of art resources and was a bit too pushed on the RNG pic.twitter.com/OpG0AsjAbb

This would complement the existing lore that Smolder’s mother, who is not present in the game, is the elemental dragon. As a result, his Q ability would evolve as the game progresses, providing a unique gameplay experience each time. This requires players to adapt and strategize based on the specific Q ability they are granted in each game, ensuring that no two games of Smolder are identical.
A player noticed that playing Smolder and pairing it with something like Wind Dragon for a Q that provides bonus movement against poison, slow, or larger area of effect Qs would be beneficial when playing 3 games in a row.
The design of the game was widely praised on Twitter, although many users acknowledged that it demanded a significant amount of resources and luck. Despite this, players were not hesitant to label it as “peak”.
