The craze surrounding Longlegs may be subsiding, but it has still made a lasting impact on the film industry. Osgood Perkins’ horror film has surpassed multiple box office records.
From the initial cryptic teaser released in January, the anticipation for Longlegs only grew stronger, eventually reaching its peak in the days leading up to its highly anticipated release date this month.
Despite the wait, for many people, it was worth it just to witness Nicolas Cage’s portrayal of a serial killer in all its creepy glory.
Despite the challenges, Longlegs has been a huge success at the box office, surpassing even the record previously held by the acclaimed film, Parasite.
Based on the most recent statistics, Perkins’ latest horror film has generated over $58.6 million in the domestic market and $8.1 million in the international market.
This surpasses Bong Joon-ho’s Oscar-winning comedy thriller, which earned $53.3 million in North America, and becomes Neon’s most successful film to date.
Additionally, Longlegs has achieved great success at the box office, making it the top-grossing independent horror film in the past ten years. It surpassed A24’s Talk to Me, which brought in $48 million in domestic sales.
Despite its estimated budget of under $10 million, the film’s impressive worldwide total and ongoing sales indicate that it is on track to earn a whopping $100 million.
Fans are attributing the success to one thing: Neon’s impressive marketing campaign. One person on X/Twitter even suggested that smaller and medium-sized distributors should study the campaign as much as they can.
“And not only that, but with a budget of less than $10 million,”commented another user on Twitter, while a third user added, “Regardless of whether you like the movie or not, it is well-deserved. The success of horror films reaching such heights can only have a positive impact on the genre.”
Despite the positive reception, there are some who are not satisfied with the result. For instance, this individual who commented, “That’s a bit absurd and I attribute it partly to those who do not watch foreign language films. Longlegs was great, but in my opinion, it doesn’t compare to Parasite.”
Someone else simply commented, “Nowhere near as good as Parasite.”
