The premiere of Look Back, the upcoming film adaptation of a manga by Tatsuki Fujimoto, creator of Chainsaw Man, is impending. Director Kiyotaka Oshiyama has opened up about the challenging process of making the movie.
Look Back is highly anticipated as an upcoming anime, thanks to its association with Chainsaw Man. Combining elements of slice-of-life with a touch of horror, it tells the tale of two children brought together by their shared passion for manga. As their lives become entangled with that of a serial killer, this anime has the potential to be one of the top releases of the year.
With the screening of Look Back set to begin, Tatsuki recently spoke to Oricon about the production process. He shared that he had a demanding schedule, spending months living in the studio in preparation for the film’s debut at this year’s Annecy Festival in just a week’s time.
He informed the outlet that he had been drawing until yesterday afternoon and completed it last night. He had spent two-and-a-half months at the office all day, but finally returned home yesterday and slept on his futon. He believes he has accumulated a significant amount of sleep debt.
The filmmaker compared the process of creating the feature to a “challenging triathlon,”but also expressed that “every day was filled with excitement.”During the time of the interview, none of the staff had seen a finished version of the film.
Due to his tight schedule, Kiyotaka was forced to purchase a new outfit for a press event as he had no clean clothes available. He explains, “I was informed of an event taking place today, and realizing I had no appropriate attire, I put in extra effort during my lunch break to buy new clothes in the evening. Therefore, everything I am wearing is brand new.”
According to Oricon, Kiyotaka appeared “exhausted”while speaking. His experience is just one of many that have recently shed light on the challenging conditions within the anime and manga industries.
According to a recent study, the anime industry may face a “collapse”if the current pattern of overworking and crunch persists. Several studios, such as Studio MAPPA which is known for producing Jujutsu Kaisen, have been accused of subjecting their employees to excessive working hours and resulting exhaustion.
We can only hope for improvements in conditions as creatives become more transparent about their process. Look Back will premiere in Japan on June 28, 2024. Stay updated on other highly anticipated anime like Tower of God Season 2 and Dandadan with our guides.
